Dr. Gottfried Lemperle is the inventor of Artefill and is one of

the researchers who has contributed to the scientific underpinnings of the facial

filler revolution. Unfortunately, Dr. Lemperle was ousted from the

company by the management team at Artes before they ran the company into

bankruptcy.

Artefill was acquired by Suneva after the bankruptcy of Artes

medical.

The price has come down for Artefill since the restructuring.

I charge $500 per 0.8 ml syringe of Artefill, but a more typical charge is $700

to $1200 per syringe.

The following financial comparison does not take into account

the patient assistance programs for Radiesse and Sculptra and assumes that one

is paying for the full cost of the treatment.

As frame of reference, I treated Mark King with 8 syringes of Radiesse

in 3 treatment sessions over the last year (see video blog http://www.thebody.com/content/art55325.html)

and these syringes contain 1.5 ml of Radiesse. So he received 12ml of product (the

cost would have been $3200 for Radiesse (at $400 per syringe). Mark also received

6 vials of Sculptra over this time period (at $600 per vial, this would have

cost $3600). The Sculptra contributed to some of the lipoatrophy correction,

but will play more of a role in the durability of the correction. One

would need 15 syringes of Artefill for an equivalent volume of product and the cost

would be $7500. Also, it is likely that 15 syringes of Artefill would not lead

to a full and permanent correction because Artefill contains 20% PMMA and 80%

bovine collagen. The bovine collagen tends to be reabsorbed over several months

and although there is in-growth of inflammatory cells and native collagen into

the implant, this in-growth does not fully replace the volume of bovine

collagen. So it is likely that retreatment would be necessary to achieve a full

and complete correction. It might take another 8 syringes ($4000) to accomplish

this goal. So to recap – estimated Artefill costs $11,500 for full

correction ($7700 actually, because for this large volume I lower the Artefill

charge to $400/syringe).

Notably, Mark had moderate lipoatrophy and some normal aging

volume loss. For someone with severe lipoatrophy the volume necessary would end

up costing in the $20,000 range.

Mind you, Radiesse and Sculptra are not inexpensive - $6800 over

the last year in Marks example. There will be additional future costs because

the effects of Radiesse and Sculptra wane with time and retreatment will be necessary

to maintain the benefit. If not for the patient assistance programs, treatment

with Radiesse and Sculptra would be cost prohibitive for most patients with lipoatrophy.

For those who do not qualify for the program, the costs continue to mount

over time.

These high costs are one

reason that people go to Mexico or Brazil for PMMA treatment.

Casavantes in Tijuana http://www.drcasavantes.com/

is a colleague and friend of mine and has tremendous experience and skill with

PMMA injections for lipoatrophy (NewPlastic brand of Brazilian PMMA). The

cost of treatment with Dr. Casavantes for PMMA for facial lipoatrophy would be

in the $2000 to $2500 range.

We are still working to start a research protocol for Artefill

for HIV lipoatrophy, but potential FDA approval for this indication is not on

the horizon yet.

I hope that this information helps!

Artefill is still available in the US. The company has gone

through financial problems

The only issue is that it would

cost us anywhere from 20,000 to 60,000 dollars to get your facial wasting

fixed. No patient assistance since they never went for the HIV

indication.

Dr

Lemperle and Dr Pierone in this list can add more since they are experts on

this product. Al Benson surely can add his thoughts.

Vergel
