Linnea,

I only have a quick minute, but I have suffered from insomnia for about

3 1/2 yrs and it's a tough thing. Here's a couple of thoughts:

Depression can cause insomnia and/or the increase in Zoloft taken at

night can cause insomnia. In my experience, I was starting to feel

depressed when I was getting very little sleep. I kept thinking, " I

can't believe I'm getting depressed on top on having insomnia! " What I

found was that as soon as I got adequate sleep, my depression was gone.

I was just fatigued and way over tired. I don't know if it's the same

with you, it could really be depression, but getting very little sleep

effects your mood in a big way.

Also, my insomnia started when I went on the pill and weaned my twins

from breast feeding. Lots of hormonal changes at once. My Dr. also

poo-poo'ed the idea that hormones were involved, but it seems too

coincidental to me. (And you!)

Can you take the Zoloft in the am? My friend is taking Zoloft and if

she takes it at night it keeps her up. Of course, it could be helping

you sleep--it's such trial and error.

Hey, this is a shot in the dark but my oldest daughter, sixteen, was just

diagnosed with narcolepsy. I am going in next to be tested since I am also

always tired. We were both treated by an endocrinologist for years for fatigue

and now I think I know why we have been so tired! Kelley in NV

Hi Linnea, I want to respond to just one of your points--about birth control.

YES, a resounding YES! it can cause mood disturbances. If your doctor doesn't

know this, he/she is just wrong and uninformed. The progesterone in it is most

often the culprit. My psychiatrist told me of a woman who was given a

progesterone shot and wound up in the psych. hospital within a week. Women with

a tendency toward depression can easily be sent into a nose dive with the Pill.

Why don't you just stop taking it as an experiment to see if it is in fact the

culprit. You suggested the timing yourself. Trust yourself.

Depression (I suffer from it) is a medical illness. It has nothing to do with

whether you have a fabulous life or not. My sister resisted this idea, telling

herself her life was " too good " for her to be depressed. When she finally took

the antidepressants she was amazed at the wonderful results. She felt really

good for the first time in her adult life.

Hope you find the answer you need and will feel much better soon. Imogene

P.S. Vitamin B12 is good for fatigue. But fatigue is a symptom of depression

and if you actually are depressed, you need to get undepressed.

Help for mom...

My 10 year old daughter is actually doing pretty well.she is on a vitamin

plan designed by a natural medicine doctor. She is taking multiple

vitamins including SAM, St. s Wort, 5 HTP, and Melatonin at night. We

also just got her blood drawn for allergy testing. She has been getting

stomachaches for years and years, and I always assumed that it was stress

related. I have always wondered though if her stomach problems and her ADHD

symptoms could be allergy related. We are about 5 days into her new diet.no

cow's milk, gluten, eggs, peanuts.I will be interested to see how this

affects her ADHD symptoms.

Now back to me.Sorry, I know this is an OCD forum, but I know a lot of our

children suffer from depression too. While, I have been taking Zoloft for 7

years now, I always believed I was taking it for insomnia. It has worked

about 90% of the time with helping me sleep. I would have bad nights here

and there, but nothing too bad. Now, this past six months, I have had more

bad nights than good nights. I hard a short trial with Welbutrin and hated

it! Now, I believe I am depressed. I feel fatigued whether or not I get a

good night sleep. I am waking up many times a night. I take Ambien CR

every couple of days to " catch up " on sleep, but do not want to take it

daily, and become dependent on it. The other nights, I take the vitamin

Valerian, which used to help a lot, but not so much anymore. My family

doctor recently increased my Zoloft dosage from 100 to 150 mg, taken at

night. Could the increase be making me feel bad?? I also, in the last

couple of months, went back on birth control, and I told my doctor that I

thought this might be the problem. She switched my prescription to another

birth control, but did not believe there could be any correlation between

birth control pills and depression and fatigue. Any one ever suffer from

depression or fatigue on birth control?? I know I am grasping, but the

timing is sticking out in my mind.

I know I need to follow up with my doctor, but I feel that you all have more

insight than she does. Do any of you suffer from depression?? Does it

cause you to be fatigued?? What do you take for depressions? Is there any

thing I can take for the fatigue symptoms (and vitamin supplements)? The

most frustrating part of this for me is that I have noooo reason to be

depressed. I have a great life.2 great children, a wonderful husband, the

ability to be a " stay-at-home-mom " , and lots of friends. I cannot wrap my

hands around the idea that I am depressed when there is no reason for the

negative feelings. I know there is a chemical cause for depression, but it

still baffles me.

Thank you so miuch for any thoughts!

Another interesting book for adults is " Potatoes Not Prozac " (PNP) by Kathleen

DesMaisons. She has a website too http://www.radiantrecovery.com And hey, my

dd12

takes Prozac, so I'm not anti-meds :-), this is just an interesting approach

looking at

altering brain chemistry through food and the approach can work for depression.

What I found out, after years of trying to treat my depression (through

psychiatrists,

psychologists, therapists, medication, light therapy, hiring a cleaning

lady...the list goes

on) was that changing my diet is the only thing that worked long-term. I never

did get the

PNP protocol to work for me.

What worked was addressing my digestive issues (chronic irritable bowel

syndrome)

through a diet called " The Specific Carbohydrate Diet " (http://

www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info), which incidentally forbids potatoes, so there

you go

LOL. I've been on the diet for about two years now and it's only since being on

it that I've

survived for more than 12 months uninterrupted by a bout of depression for as

long as I

can remember. IOW before this, I always suffered a bout of depression at one

time or

another during any given year.

Good luck in dealing with your depression, it's rarely only about what's going

on in your

life, and more about chemical or brain wiring disturbances.

Wow, Imogene, that is interesting to know. A doc once prescribed

progesterone cream (from plants) for me. My panic attacks got so much

worse. . .Was having approx. one an hour. Took myself off of it and

they calmed back down. When I told her what it did to me, she seemed

confused by that. I always thought maybe I had had a strange reaction

to it. . . until now.

Thanks for the info.

It is really amazing how little the medical community understands the

relationship between women's hormones and moods. That is why Dr. Deborah

Sichel's book, Womens' Moods is so important a read. She has done the research

and knows the deal. There is also another MD named Hadine Joffee at Mass General

Hospital in Boston who is researching hormones and moods. We women need to

inform ourselves because most of the doctors are still in the dark.

I'm just coming up from a serious depression, and I can tell you it is

exhausting. I wanted to sleep the whole time. I'm bipolar. I've had

depressions occur when things in my life were going smoothly, and a couple of

times I've had extreme stress in my life and did not get depression. Stress can

cause depression, but for me, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason for

it.

I forgot to say, I just went of birth control, and within 6 weeks my mood

I just went to the doc for depression/anxiety/stress. He put me on

Trazodone - it's a mild anti-depressant and is suppose to help with sleep. I

didn't

like it & now have a sample of Lunesta... will give that a go.

You might be surprised at what could cause depression in some people. While

i have a lot of stress in my life right now, I would never have guessed

depression. But, after really looking hard, I see classic signs of depression

in

myself. I'm also on birth control - but have been for decades, so I don't

suspect that has anything to do with it. We have had too many life-altering

situations recently (and still expecting some....) and I'm sure that's what

the cause is.

I chose to stay away from Zoloft because of the weight gain issues related

with it. Right now we're just trying to figure out something to help me sleep

& see if that isn't having more of an affect with the depression (lack of

sleep) than anything else. I guess only time will tell.

Have you tried some of the over-the-counter stuff that your dd is on? St.

's Wort, etc?? Does that not help you? Unfortunately, mine goes well

beyond any 'vitamin isle' fix. I need something stronger.

Linnea, you are not grasping, and any medical professional who tells

you there is no correlation between birth controls and depression

and/or fatigue needs to read up on the research.

I actually have endometriosis, and know a lot more about all this than

I'd rather. Women react differently to hormones, which is why you have

such a long list of possible side effects on the warning inserts on

those pills. But is absolutely a known fact that some women will suffer

from depression when taking the BCP. And fatigue is often a symptom of

depression!

I soooo appreciate all of your responses!! I cannot tell you how much

better I feel just knowing that others can relate. I know my doctor cannot

relate!

Today has been my worst day in a looooong time! I am miserable with

fatigue, and is expected as I had very little sleep last night. I do not

feel like myself at all, and having a hard time functioning as a mom, wife,

friend, etc. The good news is that it can be fixed, because I have been

" fixed " before. I am going to go ahead and go off the pill. I tried taking

my Zoloft this morning instead of last night, and am wondering if that is

exaggerating my fatigue today. I think I will go back to Zoloft at night.

I left a message for my family doctor and she is going to mail me a referral

to a specialist. Gee, no rush on that, thanks!!!

All of your insight really helps, and I have been pondering it all.

Thanks!!!
