Guest guest
I am the parent of a 9 year old recently diagnosed. When it first hit, we were quite lost as parents. When she started talking about suicide, we too took her into the ER thinking it was the responsible thing to do. Although there was one social worker who quickly diagnosed OCD and seem to understand, everyone else was not helpful. They ended up wanting to send her that night, by ambulance! to a mental health facility where we were going to have to LEAVE her alone, we could not stay. This is a child who has never slept away from home. It took everything I had, including hysterical tears on my part, to convince them that would be the absolute wrong thing for her. To be able to take her home ourselves, we had to sign all kinds of papers saying we wouldn't hold the hospital responsible if something happen to her. It was just awful on so many fronts. And this was a major Boston well known hospital. I will not return to the ER unless it is an absolute emergency. We now find it much more effective to have her at home meeting with a therapist and psychiastrist for the meds, and learning as much as parents, as we can. Just some thoughts.
