When my son was on Concerta he took Clonodine to help him sleep and it worked very well. He took 1/4 pill and fell asleep in 45 minutes.

Medications for sleeping

Presently 6yr old boy with severe Autism has been taking 3mg of Melatonin. Unfortunately he is still waking up 3-4 times a night. This family has tried the liquid Melatonin which can be given during the night but there was no improvement with his sleep.Does anyone know of any medications that may help? Thanks,Debby.

Hi Debby, My name is Tabitha. I am new to the group , and we have a son that was having similar difficulties with sleep. He would not only get up , but he would crawl around on the floor. I would take him back over to his room and tuck him in, he'd sleep awhile, and then do it again. I mentioned it to a friend of mine who is always reading up on health and nutrition . He called me from a Vitamin World in a mall and said, " Tab, I think I found something that might interest you. " It was a chewable pill called Papaya Enzyme PLUS. It tasted like peppermint, and for a child with keen senses , smelling everything before eating , he likes it. I gave him one with his last meal or snack of the day, and I made sure he wasn't eating really late , and if he was eating something, that it wasn't something sugary or with caffeine. Within the week,

he was sleeping all night. Our friend asked me to consider watching what he ate, and how it affected him too. It seem to cut back on some of the flapping of hands as well. You would probably want to run it by your doctor, or a natural doctor or nutritionist first, but it may be worth a try. They make the regular papaya, but this is the papaya enzyme plus. Perhaps a natural doctor or nutritionist in your area at a health food store, would recommend something more as far as an enzyme product to help with digestion. We used this because my son didn't like to swallow pills. I keep thinking he may have had acid reflux or something similar and just couldn't tell me. It's worth looking into . Hope this helps. my son now takes remeron for sleeping -- he started at 7.5 mg, and is

now taking a full 15 mg tablet. He is 5 3/4, and has been taking it

since he was 4. We like it pretty well, except it creates a raging

appetite! At first, he gained 5 lbs but that has been it. I have to

feed him a pretty substantial snack late night before he can go to

sleep. Along the lines of 3-4 chicken nuggets, a string cheese, etc.

It costs about $17/month for 30 tablets.

Before that, we tried clonidine -- don't remember the dosage. It

knocked him out, but didn't keep him out and he did *NOT* like the

effects of that medicine at all. Was always very angry upon waking.

I hope this helps at all....

My daughter is epileptic and her meds often interfere with her sleep. We had tried the melatonin 3mg, but she would also wake up in the middle of the night. We switched to melatonin 3mg time released and it worked much better. We found it at GNC - make sure it says "time released" in the bottom right of the bottle - otherwise you are just getting the melatonin 3 mg.

my son takes clonidine which works good . he will sleep and wake up less or sleep straight through. now this is a blood pressure medicine it lowers there blood pressure which will help them sleep this is a rx meds and may not be good for him depending on weight that kind of stuff.my son has night terrors so he still wakes up . he takes 1 and a 1/2 pill of clonidine @6 ish. he takes 1 @8 am and 1@ 3 it also helps with mood swings. chamomile tea, chamomile & lavender scents is supposed to help not sure if it will i had tried everything with my kidsi tried benadryl, melatonin, cham.tea, warm baths , massages with lavender lotion, playing spa type music in the bedroom ,tv,night lights ,putting pics of me or his bro and sis in his room, singing

,reading, even the dreaded warm milk YUCK! all kinds of stuff none of it worked.clonidine was the only thing that worked and i did notice it works better with the risperidal he also takes.well i hope you find something to help. lack of sleep for a child on the spectrum is so frustrating for us and more so for them.good luck and sweet dreams Vickie WwW.SparkleTags.Com----- Original Message ----From: patricia Orozco <paohlaw@...>Autism and Aspergers Treatment Sent: Saturday, June 7, 2008 1:29:10 PMSubject: Re: Medications for sleepingMy daughter is epileptic and her meds often interfere with her sleep.
