Missy,

How did the xray go yesterday? has a port, too, and we get his

flushed every 2 weeks - once at home and once at the hospital with IVIG.

They have suspected a clot or dislodgement before due to infiltration but it

turned out to be a nurse that didn't access him right. When the radiologist

did it, everything looked perfect. I hope that is the case for you guys!

PORT A CATH problems

My son is 9 and has had his port for 4 years. He has history of a clot

on the end so we flush his port with TPA with every access. Since last

Wed(thWell actually since the friday before that he complained about his

chest hurting but he also had a headache and sore throat, strep test was neg

so we thought it was an IVIG reaction) he has been complaining of chest pain

and arm pain (radiating and only in the arm on the side his port is on). His

port site is puffy but no redness or warmth noted. His white count was up a

little but still low (3.7) and he has had no fever, although he NEVER gets a

fever. All his other labs are fine and the heart ultrasound showed no

obvious blood clot and that the port is in the right place. He says he

didn't fall and hurt himself, so I don't think there is an injury.

Any thoughts on what this could be? We are going to go tomorrow to get his

arm X-Rayed to MAKE SURE he didn't do anything to it(he is 9) and if it's ok

he'll need to have it replaced ASAP. This all started after his last IVIG

infusion on the 22nd.

I'm nervous also about any complications from taking the port out, it was

hard getting it in as it took twice as long as it should. Anyone have any

experience with this or with removing of ports???

Hi ,

My son Lucas is 11 now and is

also on a lot of meds. We use Advair and Zyrtec his anxiety really

improved. We found that all the other antihistamines made him crazy in one way

or another. ( agiatated, hyper, mean, irritable violent) We tried

each one of them since the insurance did not want us to switch to zyrtec bec

ause of the cost. It can be very confusing when we pile several meds on

top of each other. Lucas at 9 was admitted to the psychiatric hospital for a

month because of a 3 week course of prednisone. He became homicidal and sucidal.

I do believe that consistent counseling and someone coming to our house 1x a

week to work with him has helped more than anything other than making contracts

around his behavior. We choose a behavior and set up a contract of what he needs

to do and for how long. Usually atleast a month by do it week by week and then

he earns a reward. He feels like he then has control over his

behavior.

I think what I finally figured out is

that there are going to be all kinds of things in life that our kids are

going to be stressed by but they still cannot act that way. So, I see my job as

to help him change his reactions to situations. So I try to identify the

behavior, help him see it, let him know how it impacts me, us, and him and then

we problem solve a strategy and put a contract together. We cannot change his

situation necessarily but I can help him change his reactions to it.

It has been eyeopening, this simple

strategy has totally changed our relationship. I do not spend my time feeling

sorry for him or angry with but matter of factly we work on the

behaviors.

I have heard of this happening with another mom almost sounds

similar to hers. They had taken her in and she had out grown the

port they couldn't get theirs to flush properly either. Child was

very fussy. I didn't know if this would help.
