Guest guest
Hi BJ, Our experience is somewhat different in that our son is only 5 1/2 and has had OCD for the last 10 months. However, in finding a therapist, I do have a suggestion since you seem unable to find someone qualified to help your son. We had the same problem and I too read Dr. Chansky's book. I actually contacted her office and ended up speaking with her. We set up a series of phone appointments where she " coached " and counseled us as parents after we had explained to her his history, symptoms etc. I found her advice and insight to be very helpful. Her office has a website as well which you are probably familiar with called worry wise kids (you can google it if you are not familiar) and the contact information for her is available there. Guest guest
BJ, It is terrifying to watch your child withdraw like that and not be able to help. Have you tried finding a therapist through the OCFoundation website? They also have listings for more intensive treatment programs too. 's suggestion was a good one too. Finding an OCD specialist that you could at least consult with by phone would be a good step to take. They may be able to refer you to someone in your area. Where are you located by the way? Your son's condition cannot continue at this level of severity, things will get better. Our thoughts are with you, Sinead Kid in Crisis My son was diagnosed with OCD when he was young. We had to use antidepressents for 2 1/2 years when it got out of control when he was 11. He is now 14 and has been off of the medication since last June and functioning well. We've done the therapist thing, but can't find anyone who seems to know anything. Mostly, it's been a big waste of money. Just this last week and a half, his OCD exploded. We have tried absolutely everything I've read in Tamar Chansky's book. Nothing is working. He is back on the medication, but it is not working yet and he is spending every day on the couch in the fetal position, white faced and occasionally groaning from being overwhelmed. He makes lots of noises with his mouth when he is trying to distract himself with tv or the computer. I find myself wondering if that part is OCD or Tourettes? Has anyone else experienced the noises thing? Have any of you had success with CBT? How long did it take before you had success? If you used a therapist, how in the world did you find one who knows what they are doing? He is having bouts of depression where he breaks down in tears. I find myself wondering if that is brought on by what he is going through, or if it's a side effect of the Celexa. I thought the worst of this was behind us. . . . I guess I was wrong. BJ Welcome to the group. Can I ask what area you live in? Have you been on the _www.OCFoundation.org_ (http://www.OCFoundation.org) website to look for therapists in your area? Are there any medical schools or large hospitals near you with mental health departments? That's how I found a psychologist for my daughter. I contacted the head of the mental health dept at a local medical school/teaching hospital. LT
Guest guest
When my 7yr old dd was in " crisis mode " she made a lot of noises, etc. I'm pretty sure that it was part of the OCD/tourrettes stuff. She also did the fetal position and refused to let us near her. It was heartbreaking. I'm not sure if it is out yet but Dr. March is suppose to have a new book coming out for parents. > > My son was diagnosed with OCD when he was young.
