Guest guest
Hi all. My 7 year old dd is currently on 100mg of Zoloft which seems to be helping with the OCD, rages, tics, and mood swings, but her lack of focus and hyperactivity is still out of control. She takes 1000 mg of omega-3 which is suppose to help, but I've not seen any real difference. Is there anything else that some of you are doing to help with this? Although she's not disrupting instruction (yet!) in school, her teacher says that she is up and down constantly (I can totally see that) and she's not sure how much she's getting out of lessons at this point. Any pointers would be helpful! Thanks!
Guest guest
: I'm new to this group. My son is 6 1/2 and diganosed with OCD and Trichotillomania. I've had a similar problem with him at school all year...he's in 1st grade. He keeps falling out of his desk on purpose...like a dozen times a day. He won't pay attention, won't focus. This has truly frustrated his teacher, and us. I have a good friend who is an occupational therapist. She told me that she has noticed what SHE thinks are some sensory integration issues with our son, and she referred me to a book AND a website. She works with OCD / ADD / ADHD kids all day. She suggested I check out the website and purchase a " fit seat. " So I did. Took it to school this week, and he's stayed in his desk all week! His teacher was thrilled to death! (Me too!) The fit-seat allows a child to rock, wiggle, and squirm around all they want...yet still remain in their desk. It just gives them an energy release and some sensory feedback. The website I was referred to was http://www.therapyshoppe.com. I also purchased some " fidget toys " for him to tuck inside his desk, and for his teacher to hang onto and give him as she sees fit. He's done great all week. (I hope it continues!) Another thing the teacher is trying is allowing him to run an errand if he just can't sit still anymore and needs to get up. He can go get a drink of water, run an errand for her, or she has him take books to the library. These are all things another 1st grade teacher friend of mine does whenever she gets ADD / ADHD / OCD kids in her class. She's got a deal worked out with the librarian ahead of time, where the child delivers books and the librarian just takes them and sets them aside to be sent back to the class later. The librarian might even send the child back with some really heavy books. Something about carrying something heavy for a few minutes apparently helps. I also purchased, from that website, a book titled " Teaching the Tiger: A Handbook for Individuals Involved in the Education of Students with ADD / Tourette Syndrome or OCD. " Wow. A lot of things began to fall into place for me after reading that book. I gave it to his teacher. Our OCD kids simply do not always learn like other kids do. That book gave all kinds of tips, tricks, and modifications for teaching every subject. Had lots of useful information for parents too. I recommend it. Hope some of that helps?
