Even without OCD, a car accident is a horrible experience for any family to

live through! Few kids your daughter's age would have kept their cool &

handled the situation the way she did. Double kudos to her for getting through

it with OCD to deal with as well. So glad the injuries were minimal &

everyone walked away from the crash - it could have been so much worse.

, how scarey ! I am glad they are both ok. And I am glad they were both

able to calm themselves and handled it well. Congrats to your dd for filling

out the applications! It is good to hear a success story.

avoided another potential...

Hello dear friends,

I am exhausted, and happy, to report that we have had a stressful week

and came through it well. Our 17 year old (OCD+), Ziv, was to fill out

college/university applications but the thought of it brought on such

panic and tears that the principal called. I spoke with her and

explained that this an exposure exercise, just like any other, and her

goal is to complete the 3 applications - even if she decides not to

attend. Just stating it like this brought down her stress level

significantly and she finished them in 2 days!

Our second 'test' occurred after dinner on Friday. Tom, 23 (OCD+),

hasnt lived with us in 5 years and was visiting for the first night of

Chanukah. After dinner, Ziv was driving him to friends (Tom has no

drivers license). Ziv called to report that they had been in an

accident. The ambulance and police were there within seconds and we

followed minutes behind. What we saw was Tom dripping with blood in the

ambulance while Ziv had blood on her but no visible wounds. We learnt

that Ziv was stopped at a traffic light trying to turn left and was hit

by an oncoming car who was speeding but had the right of way. Our car

is a total wreck.

TO make this short, after 5 hours in emergency, Ziv is sore and bruised

while tom has stitches on his head. Ziv was able to handle her panic by

remembering to breath and took charge of the situation, she said.

Immediately upon impact she ordered everyone out of the car (they were

3 of them) and used her cell phone to call 911. This is the kid that

cried because she had to fill out a form!

Tom kept asking for his glasses (flattened on the road) and repeatedly

asked what he would do about his glasses, had a cycle of phrases that

he kept repeating (its Friday night and I'm sober; I go to my parents

for dinner and this is what happens; do I look OK?; is there blood on

my clothing (covered); and how did I get glass on my left side and head

when the car hit us on the right??). Overall he was calm, patient, and

only later on did the shock set in where he was more of a concern. For

those that know of Tom, it is rare for him to talk without profanity,

however in the ER waiting room he was very good at keeping it low key!

Oh, and my previously friendless son had a steady stream of people

coming to check on him - some took buses for over an hour to get there!

Now that he has 8 stitches (counted a few times) we covered them with a

band aid to stop him from seeing them when he does his mirror check! He

has a concert tomorrow afternoon where his band is the featured band -

even he is worried that he will be half a beat behind! He asked for

Oxycontin, however the doctor told him he wasnt that bad! For those

that dont know, Oxycontin is a pain medication that has a high street

value.

Tom's final words before going to sleep were: " Next time don't heat up

hash browns when your supposed to make Latkes! "

I dont know how we would have made it through last night without the

experience of Exposure and Reponse Prevention and Cognitive Behavioural

Therapy (cbt). I witnessed each of them using relaxation techniques

without any encouragement and really was there as a driver since they

both took care of them selves so well!!

I am proud of them and can't stress enough how teaching someone the

adaptability of cbt to any situation helps eliviate the stress

connected with ocd, etc. I am glad that for them its a way of life!

Take care all,

wendy

,

I'm so glad everyone is okay! And hooray for Ziv, handling

everything so well! I'm the LAST person to be around in an

emergency, I'm just at a loss, I'm the one searching for someone like

Ziv to take over and know what to do, LOL!

I'm sure they're sore. Hope they recover soon! Sounds to me like

Ziv took after mom!
