Guest guest
Hi, I think Clomipramine is the generic name for Clonidine, which is actually a blood pressure medication but has several off-label uses. My 14yo son (not OCD) uses it for his Tourette's tics and has been on it for a number of years now. The only time he has had a problem was when we tried to increase the dosage and it was apparently too much for his skinny little then-preadolescent body. He started having " mini blackouts " where he was still aware but things went black. We backed down on the dosage and they stopped. Eventually, his med regimen was changed to taking Abilify in the morning with a small " booster " dose of Clonidine in the evening. I think it made him a little bit sleepy/lethargic in the beginning, but that passed pretty quickly. As I said, he does not take these for OCD, but TS is somewhat related. Good luck to you and your family as you move forward with trying to find the right combo of meds. P. Ballard <hlballard@...> wrote: Hello All, The latest med prescribed for Elise is clomipraminean (an older OCD med with more side affects) along the mood stabilizer Abilify. Guest guest
Hi , I can't help with the Anafranil, but my daughter was on Abilify for a few months, as well as my son. He is on it presently. My daughter had to discontinue it due to a large amount of weight gain. My son has also gained a large amount of weight, but he was so small to begin with, we are sticking with it. I understand a side effect of anafranil is weight gain also. The abilify works very well for my son. He has the " bad thought " ocd subtype. His thoughts have dramatically reduced. Hope this helps some! If I can help you out with anythng else, give a holler! Hugs Judy

Guest guest
, Clomipramine, Anafranil, is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Clonidine belongs to the general class of medicines called antihypertensives. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Clonidine was prescribed for Elise as a sleep aid, it made her sleepy but she had restless legs as a side affect and couldn't fall asleep. It was a very long night for us. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Price Sent: Thursday, January 04, 2007 10:36 PM Subject: Re: clomipramine (Anaframil) Hi, I think Clomipramine is the generic name for Clonidine, which is actually a blood pressure medication but has several off-label uses. Guest guest
Judy, Did you notice a difference in eating habits? I'm asking because when Elise started I noticed an increase in her carbohydrate intake. She would sneak down to the kitchen and bring 3 beagles up to her room and eat them all. This is something we never saw before. She also showed a taste for chocolate, something she's never been all that fond of. I found a pile of wrappers under her pillow! She is a very skinny girl right now (my husband and I both were at this age); I can't find pants that fit her around the waist. So maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if she put on a few pounds. How much weight did your daughter and son gain? Thank you Judy, _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Dina Sent: Friday, January 05, 2007 4:28 PM Subject: Re: clomipramine (Anaframil) jchabot wrote: > > Hi , > I can't help with the Anafranil, but my daughter was on Abilify for a > few months, as well as my son. Guest guest
Sorry, my mistake. I knew that Clonidine was generally known as an antihypertensive, just got the generic names confused. P. Guest guest
Hi , My son (5) started on the Abilify at age 4.10. He was only 32 lbs. Now he weighs43,which is a perfect weight for him at this point, but I can see how it can get out of hand very quickly. My son never ate much before this med, now he wants to eat constantly. He asks for chocolate and cheese. It's like he needs to eat every 2 hours! My daughter(10) was underweight also before starting on Seroquel, which was than switched to Abilify. She started on Seroquel at age 9, and weighed 64 lbs. She now weighs 85, which is an extreme weight gain for her.She is also short, and went from an 8 slim, that was hanging off her, up to a size 12, in literally 4 months. It was fine at first, because she was so thin, but it quickly escalated. She too will shove down food and hide it in her room on the side of her bed. It's awful. My daughter basicaly eats only carbohydrates at this point. I had posted a few months ago, because she is a gymnast, and this massive weight gain has really taken it's toll on her skills. She dropped out of her meet last week due to her weight gain. She was afraid she wouldn't be able to do her roundoff-backhandspring because of this weight from these meds. She has also had this happen to her in the past from other meds. It's devastating. I hope you have good luck! On a positive note, despite the weight, it works very well for my son! Guest guest
Hi, my daughter is on clonidine at bedtime to help her sleep. I'm not sure if it actually helps all the time. She will fall asleep about one hour later. Her rituals at night have decreased somewhat. I'm not sure if it is because she is able now to understand more about her disease or we are able to redirect her easier. She has some nights where she sleeps the whole night and others where she will wake up a few times and need me to lie down with her and fight back the OCD. Her psychiatrist said it was the only med she can have at this time till she passes puberty. She is 9 years old. Hope this helps you to know someone else is on this med. I haven't noticed too many side effects. She is taking half of a 0.1mg tablet and sometimes I will give her the whole tablet.
