Guest guest
I agree that these conditions aren't necessarily happening at a higher rate but that the medical field knows what they are now. I have had OCD my entire life (my mom tells me stories about me at the age of two that are so much like my own daughter) and I was not diagnosed until I was in my thirties--after both of my kids were diagnosed. My mom says that people just didn't take their kids to the doctor for things like that. She asked my pediatrician about my behavior one time and was told that any problems I was having were hers to deal with. She never asked again and struggled for years. Even when I started therapy in high school, I was not diagnosed. My dad, his sister, his father, and probably his grandfather all show/showed signs of very classic OCD and they were never diagnosed. I think the disorder has been out there and people have not always had a name for them. Kelley in NV
Guest guest
I think maybe we are more aware of these conditions now and that could be why more cases are picked up. Certainly looking at my family history I would say my dad and my brother had some kind of disorder. Although Asperger's was discovered at around the 1940's it seems only more recently that the medical profession are recognising it. Guest guest
I was thinking the same thing, . I have heard that autism has the same rate of occurrence in countries where mercury is not used in vaccinations. Kelley in NV
Guest guest
We had a very difficult time outruling pdd-nos with my dd. She had so many overlapping symptoms. She was practically diagnosed with everything. My dd also has all the sensory issues, but is currently diagnosed with ocd and bipolar. Bipolar causes manyoverlapping symptoms like adhd, add, odd, panic, and ocd symptoms. It is very difficult for doctors to diagnose if your child has one disorder or several. Like I posted before, you have to get a neuropsychological evaluation done on your child. I had two done on my dd, because of all the controversy. Genetics plays a very big part in all of this. I have heard about the MMR vaccines causing havoc in children. My girls didn't have a problem with them but my son, diagnosed with ocd and mood disorder nos, had a severe allergic reaction to the MMR vaccine. He could not receive a second dose of the shot. After getting him tested, he was already immune with the one dose. Just me- rambling on! Hugs Judy McDonough <kevntimmcd@...> wrote: It's interesting that so many of the symptoms of Asperger's and OCD overlap. I am wondering if the prevelence of OCD and bi-polar has gone up as much as autism spectrum disorders (which is now roughly 1 in 150 kids). If so, I would definately think that environmental factors are playing a significant role. Additionally, there are many families with ASD kids who also have bi-polar, OCD, depression, and schizophrenia in the family. I think with many of these disorders it's a combination of genetic predisposition (poor methylators), environmental toxin (like mercury and/or lead) and viral or bacterial infection. Also, in autism there is autoimmunity...and heavy metals can bring about autoimmunity. That is why aluminum is used as an adjuvant in vaccines - to get an immune response. Many kids with autism have highly elevated antibodies to measles, and some even have vaccine- strain measles DNA in their intestines and spinal fluid. > > thank you - i'll just stick with OCD for now then - that's more than > enough LOL! > eileen > > > > > > > > > Quoting jchabot <jchabot@...>: > > > Eileen, My dd has the " alphabet soup " diagnosis. Guest guest
Just an FYI - There has not been any CONCLUSIVE evidence that these vaccinations are causing autism or anything else on the spectrum. Those of us who are dealing with these concerns would often love to have something to blame for our children's difficulties. Unfortunately nothing has been discovered yet that can cure our kids. in Southeastern PA " autumn71A@... Guest guest
Eileen, I reckon you are right! Living here in Ireland I would say a lot of people have it and aren't aware or as you say they are so full of drink they don't know! That was the case for my dad anyway! Thankfully times have changed here and the docs at least are aware as are the schools, just a shame there is no support network. Guest guest
I'm very lucky as the school is great. Mind you the primary school wasn't! Its only since Jono has moved to secondary that he has help. Val Re: Asperger's-OCD-AUTIM-BIPOLAR >>>> >>>> >>>>> It's interesting that so many of the symptoms of Asperger's and OCD >>>>> overlap. Guest guest
Val, Glad to hear your son is getting some help at school! I would have to agree too about the prevalence of OCD in the past. Growing up in Ireland several members of my family had symptoms of anxiety and OCD but, of course, were never diagnosed. At least now we can understand better what is going on, even if it is still hard to treat!
