Guest guest
Hi there I have 3 children (dd15, dd6, and ds almost 5) My son is the reason I'm on this list (pdd-nos). However, my 6yo dd is " quirky " . She has issues with constipation, and previously would only go maybe twice a week. She's such a little thing -- and was in such pain from passing such huge amounts of feces. She gives very casual regard to time -- she will frequently tell me about something that happened " yesterday " , when in actuality it was 2 wks, or even 2 yrs ago lol. So, here is what I set up with her -- and she had to repeat the " rule " back to me. " Every day, in the evening, after school, I have to go to the bathroom and try to poop. After I poop, I can play on the computer. I can't play on the computer until I've pooped " At first, she thought she was being punished (waiting for the computer). She would cry if she couldn't go the first time -- but it took a few times of me reassuring her, that I wasn't angry-- but she would try later. And every time she did. It helped her and me to relax about the whole issue. My dh said that you can't regulate when she goes -- but what he's not understanding is that she needs me to tell her when. She tells me that she doesn't have to go until her bottom is sore. I'm trying to re-train her to go before her bottom is sore. And I'm tying it into normal routine events (school, computer play time) -- because she is so flaky about time. I'm happy to say that since we've implemented this, we haven't had the huge constipation issues. She has gone most every day. I've *almost* stopped micro-managing it <G>. A side benefit: she has stopped zoning out forever in front of the computer. She plays a little bit, and not every day. I don't know if any of this is helpful, but it's definitely a low- tech idea. I hope that your son is able to have permanent relief from this issue. Hugs, Trish in IL > > is and has been all of his life, constipated. He has a bowel movement no more often than once a week or more. Monday night I heard him crying and when I checked he was alternately sitting with some feces hanging out and standing allowing it to retract back in. He was stark naked, wringing wet with sweat and in obvious distress. Within 40 minutes he had made several trips to the potty with success 3 times and pain and frustration several other times. The successes resulted in 2 hunks about the size of most spice bottles and 2 hunks that big around but only half as long; there was blood shown twice. She poked around on tummy, then told him she was gonna have to put on a glove and stick her little finger up his bottom. He said Ok and was good as gold while she did it. She said there was no occult blood. He still had really hard poop in spite of all that he got rid of on Monday night. I had to give him 2 Fleets enemas tonight. He was very good after I got him to understand what position he needed to be in; even held his little hole apart for me. I gave him one at 4:30 and the other one after Church and his Choir tonight. Dr wants his stool softeners increased to 2 a day and take Miralax (sp) in 8 oz of water a day. Also, eat more veggies, eat ripe pears, drink pear juice. If he is not going at least every 3 days by 2 weeks she wants to refer him to a Gastroenterologist. She also said that his constipation is what makes his breath smell so bad all the time. Now I find that out after a Dentist and Orthodontist blamed it on his sinuses. Guest guest
Thank you very much for your input. You know Aspies, or at least, seems so sensitive to things that don't bother "normal" people; like loud noises, bright lights, unusual odors or tastes. But, he has always wiggled while sitting on his butt when he had to go potty. If I ask him if he needed to go he would always say, "No." But within a few minutes he would jump up and run toward the bathroom saying, "I've got to go potty." He doesn't seem to feel the urge to go until it is almost too late. He did have a BM Tues night and it was soft and did not hurt nor stop up the stool. It had been almost a week since I cleaned him out. A child of a friend of a friend, had to have surgery on the nerves in his bottom because he could not feel when he had to go. I pray that it doesn't come to that! Thanks again for your input; I am learning so much from this list and thank Sharon for keeping it running with all else she has to do!. Guest guest
OK, thanks for your input, Greta. Several people have suggested Allergies as the cause. He has always broken out in rashes and/or hives but no real pattern and not long lasting until he had that outbreak of hives about a month ago. Last year I mentioned the skin issues to his Pediatrician, but she did not want to put him through the allergy testing at that time. I am going to insist that she refer him to an allergist soon.
