The more the school understands, the better it will be for your boy. I have no experience with Abilify, but I know plenty of other parents on the board have talked about it - I'm sure you'll get some response to your email. A favorable result with just 1mg??? Your son rocks!!! Don't question it, just enjoy it! LT
Guest guest
Great news! My daughter hasn't been on Abilify, but has had a 2 day response to Zyprexa, which is in the same family. It's been amazing how quickly she calms and her bad thoughts go away or go down to a minimum. Dina
Guest guest
and have they stayed away? I am afraid of getting used to this and then wake up and it's back! > > Great news! Guest guest
My son, age 9 has bad thought OCD and is on abilify, 5 mg. He started at age 6 and his ocd slowly went away so we weaned him off of it 1 1/2 years later. He gained a lot of weight and had some other side effects that went away. Then we had to put him back on it in September and will now keep him on it until adulthood. We put him back on it because of another severe onset; he has PANDAS. His OCD has slowly subsided but he still has the bad thoughts, especially at night but not nearly as severe. The sexual thoughts and suicide thoughts have gone away (thank goodness). He also still has a lot of the aquisitional OCD.If your child's bad thoughts disappeared after one day, I would not attribute it to the abilify. It takes about six weeks for the medication to build up in the body before there is enough to start working. Give it at least a year before you make your decision about it's efffectiveness. Our doctor has stressed to us that this is not a short term drug. Good luck and let me know how it all turns out.
Guest guest
Basically. If I would keep her dose the same. Unfortunately, Zyprexa causes rapid weight gain for her, so I'm always trying to cut the dose. We may switch and try Abilify! I hope the Abilify is the key for your child. Guest guest
Hi , My dd(10) was on abilify. It did nothing for her, except cause her to gain 20 lbs in 2 months. My son(5) is on it presently. He takes 2mg. I honestly don't see it working too well for him also. He has the bad thought ocd. He is sick right now so naturally the ocd is much worse. Just remeber each child is different. Is this your son's first med? I wish you continual good luck!!!!!!!! Hugs Judy

Guest guest
Hi , My son was first put on prozac, and it seemed as though his bad thoughts literally melted away. He became very activated on it, so we switched him to zoloft. Still no bad thoughts, but horrible behavior. than the psychiatrist suggested the abilify(1mg), which also kept the bad thoughts away, but a few weeks ago they suddenly came back slowly and got worse daily, so I called the p-doc and he raised the abilify to 2mg. It's still not working any better. I'm praying it's due to the fact that he's had a bad cold, or maybe it's too early to tell, seeing the dose was raised last week. The funny thing is that the prozac worked immediately, which I understand is impossible. Could it be that if my son had been given a placebo it still may have worked? I'm really confused with this issue, because the doctor cannot diagnose him correctly. He has been diagnosed with " bad thought " ocd, than mood disorder nos, now he's saying anxiety. OK, I've never heard of anxiety alone giving you thoughts of murdering people, and thinking you are chewing on your private parts when you are five years old!!!!!!!! I think I need to switch p-docs again. I went through this diagnostic dilemma with my youngest daughter also(10) but she never had those kinds of thoughts. I don't know where to turn again!!! My son has PANDAS and I'm wondering if that is why the ocd is worsening, regardless of the med change. My daughter has ocd, but not PANDAS. I'm really glad the abilify is working wonders for your son! I have heard some really good reports about it working well for some kids. Guest guest
Hi Judy, My son started with prozac and it took the edge off jis anxiety; he is much more tolerant with others, but the bad thoughts were still there. With Prozac We saw a difference very quickly, probably within a week. The abilify worked overnight. I am afraid that it may be the same as with you, that in a month the thoughts will be back. He does not have PANDAS. I am looking for a therapist for him, all the good ones are booked full. My dd,12 yrs, diagnosed three years ago, probably with Pandas, is doing well with 10 mg prozac. She did have bad thoughts at first, but mostly rituals which were helped a great deal with ERP. She does well now (after a long adjustment to middle school). Every now and then I need to remind the school about the OCD. in MA > > Hi , > My son was first put on prozac, and it seemed as though his bad thoughts literally melted away.
