Hi Margaret and welcome to the world of Kombucha!

One of the easiest places to obtain a gallon or two gallon glass jar

is at your local department store. Both Walmart and Target have

gallon to two gallon Anchor Hocking clear glass cookie jars. (If you

are in the US)

Tis is what they look like:

They worked well for me and although I have moved on to 2 1/2 gallon

containers for continuous brewing, I still use the one gallon cookie

jars for specialty brews and for Growing SCOBYs to share.... :-)

i found a large, wide glass jar with spigot at Garden Ridge for $20.

I use a lead-free water crock that I found very reasonably online.

I got my one-gallon glass pickle jars from FreeCycle.

Strangely enough, glass jars can be expensive when purchased new and

empty but are quite reasonable when bought used or filled with other

stuff.

I still do periodic stops at the local thrift store

(goodwill,salvation army etc) where I found a spigoted gallon jar for

$2 and a 2 gallon fish bowl for $3( i use that for my scoby hotel)

For a narrower jar, you can buy a gallon of pickles at

Costco,smart & final,sam's club etc.for about $4. I transferred the

pickles to tupperware and washed the jar with boiling water. The

pickles weren't very good so I used them chopped up in salads and took

some to work and shared(waste not and all).

Be careful to avoid any glass containing lead. You might think that

a pretty, colored jar would give your KT some style and class but

you'd probably just be getting lead in your glass(that will leach into

your tea, and you) Tap on the side of your thriftstore container to

insure a dull sound, it should not ring out like, er, leaded crystal.

Some or most of the colored or fancy shaped glass might contain lead.

****(Correct me if I'm wrong on this people, after all I read about it

on this here internet thing.)
