Can someone explain to me exactly what is lactulose, I thing it is something for constipation? I was just wondering as I have IBS, and have for years, I take zelmorn - but very expensive, and now I am on some pretty serious pain meds - which constipate me - would the lactulose help this issue?

Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used to treat

constipation. It is broken down in the colon into products that pull water out

from the body and into the colon. This water softens stools. Lactulose is also

used to reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood of patients with liver

disease. It works by drawing ammonia from the blood into the colon where it is

removed from the body.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other

uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should this medicine be used?Return to top

Lactulose is givin to people with severe constipation or high blood amonia levels . It is prescription only . There are things like magnesium citrate which can be purchased at any drug store without a prescription

Good Description, !! I probably would have said it really gives you the runs,don't plan on long trips, KNOW where the EXIT to the Restrooms are in your regular haunts. This is a little graphic, but we are all adults here and it IS a MAJOR problem!! Once you THINK you are done in the RR stall, (ONLY DO THE NEXT STEPS! nothing else!!!)).. stand up, count one mssissippi,two miss. etc. to ten.(not outloud). Sit down, wait one minute or so and repeat process, then file your report.(do the paper work!!), You may need to repeat from beginning... I 'm really serious about knowing where the RR are. Trust

haven’t had the lactulose myself, but I can compare it (in a small way)

to being pregnant and needing to know where all the RRs are. But then, my

first kid was over 9 lbs. & ripped my sphincter. Then I REALLY needed to

know where they were for a long time till it healed. I don’t envy any of

you lactulose folks.

Lactulose is not prescription in Canada. Anyone can buy it over the counter but if my doctor prescribed it my Disability would pay for it.
