We have seen a dramatic increase in aggressive behavior in my son every year when the seasons change and it is the absolute worst when the season changes to spring. I don't know if it allergies or spring fever or something else. I DO know it is awful. BethI love a child affected by autismOn Apr 3, 2012, at 5:07 PM, "ib_sewing2" <ib_sewing2@...> wrote:

she was doing really well.... especially in school....but here lately...she has re-gressed.... into the biting and slapping and getting mad.

We sort of think it happenead because she was spending TOO much time on the computer... so took it away.... said it needed fixed....

She got mad the other day and bit her Dad and then the next day bit Mom. When she got sent to her room because she had done something that wasn't acceptable.... two days in a row.... she took her clothes off and peed on the bed!

Today at school she was told to stop making spit bubbles..... and then was put in time out ....to sit on the bench outside.... then they took her into the break room she tried to bite the aide and then the teacher...it took 30 minutes to calm her down and then it was time to go home and she was all happy and smiles....

My daughter is at her wits end.....also.... she is on probiotics, vitamins and GF diet....

Anyone give any thoughts on this that has experienced these problems.

I'm really embarrassed to write this.... but we need some input...

oh, and by the way..... she gave her time back on the computer...and she was SO happy.....and things have gotten worse!

My son always has the most problems around transitions- recently it was Spring

Break and the day light savings time change. Autism doesn't give anyone the

right to behave badly but I found the worst time to talk about expectations is

in the moment- I keep it simple- 'no', 'this is not ok' and 'stop'. I match my

facial expression to the message and concentrate the most attention on what he

does right. I label the feeling and role play coping skills. Visual schedules

work during transitions, with just enough forewarning to avoid anxiety and

overthinking. I give choices (keep them manageable, two usually) and

opportunities to lead. And, I allow time for stimming when appropriate. It's

important not to allow biting to be a go-to learned behavior and avoid any

unintended reinforcement, especially attention. A lot of kids really don't

differentiate positive from negative attention, and my Ben enjoys being in

control of adults. I say 'ouch, that hurts mom,

nice touches only please!'

I, myself, hate computer games, trying instead to keep engaged with

manipulatives, like Legos or social interaction activities. I found that Ben

screams and is aggressive when he loses a computer game and is difficult to

redirect. It makes me anxious, too, listening to his frustrations and it becomes

a vicious circle. As far as peeing in the bed- keep it simple- big girls pee in

the toilet and put a pad on the mattress in the meantime. Peeing in corners is

fairly common, too.

When this happened yesterday.... she has an aide.... we don't know how she

replied to this.... sometimes I find it best to explain why....she never asks

WHY....

The last time we had problems with the biting - she was getting molars...plus I

do believe the allergies are a problem.

It is just so sad.... because a couple of weeks ago was her birthday and she had

been sooooo good ..... the only thing that changed was taking the computer

away.... she now gets a time limit....

I think we need to go back to the visual schedule....

I pray that things are much better today.... her Behavioral Counselor from

Easter Seals comes today! Maybe she will have some answers...

Thank you all for your responses!
