Guest guest
We begin potty training today for our 13yr old autistic non verbal boy. We charted for a week, diapers come off this morning. I would appreciate prayers and good thoughts. I'm very nervous, have never done this before. I'm the stepmom! Guest guest
Thank you Kate, we are resolved. I expect a big mess, it can be cleaned up. We were advised to put diapers on for sleeping. What about that?
Guest guest
Good for you!! Just remember he has had years of doing things a certain way so it will take awhile to change his habit but have lots of good rewards and make it a party time when he has success....make it worth his while! LOL Rewards and cleaning supplies will get you thro this.. Personally I am big on reenforcing positive behaviors and ignoring negative one( if possible) ..Lots of visuals and social stories and rewards will help! Good luck and keep us posted as you can. Guest guest
I highly recommend keeping the diapers on for sleep. Otherwise you may cause sleep problems and if the mess doesn't wake him up then he will be sleeping in an unsanitary bed. My son potty trained during the day and it was another 4 years before he was night trained. I am sending good luck and prayers your way. I really believe our kids can potty train!! -Liz > > Thank you Kate, we are resolved. I expect a big mess, it can be cleaned up. We were advised to put diapers on for sleeping. Guest guest
Everyone thanks for all the support, it is sooooo very helpful. It has been an awesome first day. I think our boy has no idea about how to hold his urine. I have never potty trained a child, any child. Will he learn to hold his urine? After a feeding (via a G tube) he is wetting all the time, small times instead of a substantial visit to the toilet. Do children just learn this on their own? We were giving substantial fluids in order to build an urge to urinate. But I didn’t think he would pee every 15 min. Now I know better. Charting with diapers is very skewed. Now we will chart every 15 minutes since it is easy to see if his underwear are wet or not. We have him in a t-shirt and underwear only for this stage in the journey. I also think he is learning about what his body does. diapers really hid his bodily functions from his awareness. It is really neat to see some of his reactions. I hope he is beginning to get some connection between his body and what it does.
