Guest guest
Good Morning Everyone. I'm happy to be part of the group and to interact with people who know what I am going through, parenting a child on the ASD spectrum. I have 3 children, ages 25,24 and 8.5, and three wonderful grand children ages 6,6,7. My son is in 3rd grade, and was recently identified on the spectrum as PDD-ONS and is very high functioning, yet not considered to have Asperger's. He is a good kid, has nice manners mostly, and really tries to do his best. The conflict comes in when what he thinks is best, doesn't match the rules or other people's ideas of what's best. He is on two days of suspension for his behavior at school. It has been a progressing problem, and one that happened in 2nd grade, as well. He " loves " a certain girl, tells her constantly, tells everyone that he is going to marry her, embarrasses her in class and at recess, hugs her and doesn't let go no matter how much she yells at him to let go, and now it is completely out of hand, with her parents going to the principal at school about it. We don't seem to be able to get through that ASD wiring, to get him to see that he is mistreating this girl and that he is in danger of some serious consequences, if he keeps this up. Has anyone else had this trouble or have any thoughts on how we might reach him, to change this behavior? Thank you for allowing me to join your group. I appreciate any thoughts anyone has to share. Guest guest
Have you tried a social story? There have been undesirable behaviors with my 9 year old son that couldn't be affectively addressed by just reprimands or punishments. However, in some cases a well worded social story can get the message across. It will be necessary to include pictures, of course. It's difficult for children on the spectrum to understand that other people may have a different perspective on a shared experience, but a social story is a tool that has worked pretty well with my son in similar situations. > > Good Morning Everyone.
