Hi,Sometimes Mehta casting is called Risser casting but the oryginal Risser cast looks differently. So Risser does not have to mean Risser.Risser cast is the full cast (from chin to hip). It' may be used in adolescent scoliosis as a preoperative mean. These are exampleshttp://images39.fotosik.pl/326/ad8f4eee14a9ac5c.jpghttp://www.flickr.com/photos/94977816@N00/6077238128/From "Casting and traction treatment ..." paper (http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/resources/sdarticle.pdf)Scoliosis casting comes in several varieties. Themost commonly used method in theUnited States isthat of Risser [1]. Indeed, body casting in this coun-try often is called Risser casting. Risser developedtwo types of casts. The initial method used turn-buckles, whereas the latter, termed a localizer cast, used a three-point mold and a pusher. Although itis possible to obtain signiï¬cant curve correctionwith this technique, it does not account sufficientlyfor rotational abnormality, and, especially in youn-ger children with flexible bones, it can cause signiï¬-cant rib deformities and chest constriction.I does not matter how it's called it does matter how it looks. Even if you put "Risser cast" phrase in google graphics search you will get also pictures of Mehta casts.Mehta cast is over or under the shoulder and has big hole in front (mushroom shaped) for stomach and decompression hole in the back (in the oposite side to the rib humb). It is specially designed to correst rotation and let the stomach and chest expand.MP From: abbeymuniz <abbeymuniz@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Monday, June 4, 2012 11:13 PM Subject: Difference between EDF, metha and risser casts?

Hi guys! Can someone please help me out. Our daughter is currently on her first cast (she is 13 months old) and I am assuming that it is a risser cast. However, I have seen some of you guys post about EDF casting as well as Metha casting. So, whats the difference between the three types, as in how they look and what they are designed to do? As I have posted from before, information from our doc has been extremely limited, therefore I am not even sure what cast she has been placed in. Her cast goes from her hips to her armpits, has no shoulder straps, the belly is cut out and the back has a hole in it. Agh, I feel so silly asking, but I think it's crucial for us to know what to properly call her cast! Thanks!

Excellent explanations MP. Thank you for learning your stuff!! (and

sharing).

Proper terminology is crucial at this phase of the game. As it stands in

the U.S., if a family requests a cast they will most likely get a risser

or a cast done without a frame. If thats the case odds are Mehta's

crucial ET principles will NOT be applied. Rendering complete curve

resolution impossible.

ISOP urges all parents to use proper terminology when pursuing Dr. Mehtas

Early Treatment. Please ask for Early Treatment w/ Mehta's specialized

EDF casting. Then they know you have done your research! And, will

settle for nothing less. Parent demand will make this Standard of Care

throughout the world. Plain & simple:)
