I just noticed what looks to be an inguinal hernia on Kayleigh(good to have her

own personal nurse mommy!)... has anyone had issues with hernias and casting?

I'm calling her dr tomorrow but I'm thinking from the pressure/restriction of

the cast along with the weakening abdominal muscles from the cast this could be

common?

I will say that our daughter Avonlea now has an inguinal hernia since her

casting. Our ortho Dr didn't catch it but he was not looking below the cast but

in the opening of the stomach hole of the cast. Unfortunately I had only been

described what it looked like when she was crying with her grandmother and she

noticed. It was not until after the appt when he said no and that would not be

an issue that I was giving her a rinse in the sink and she started to throw a

tantrem when I saw it popping out. We took her to her regular physician and have

been referred to a specialist. I do think the cast puts too much pressure around

the waist and causes it. Another link is hernia due to tissue formation and

scholiosis are linked to marhpans disease a skeletal and tissue related

disorder. They can be tested for it. Note, a person does not have to have crazy

long extremities to have marphans that is only one of the symptoms.

Just wanted to share...Wow!! It just clicked after reading 's response - I never put the two together...both of my younger kiddos have CCA, which is extremely similar to Marfan's and both have had a hernia!  My 5 1/2 year old who never suffered from scoliosis had a hernia that had to be surgically repaired and my 2 year old who has severe scoliosis (curves reaching the 120 degree mark) only had a hernia after being casted.  It has since repaired itself.  I agree with that multiple things can contribute.  Seeing the pediatrician is the best.  I think that in most cases they will watch it for a little while before deciding on treatment, to see if it resolves on its own.

 Good luck, Caitlin!! :) ~ T.On Mon, Jul 23, 2012 at 8:44 AM, cbrubakerrn <cbrubakerrn@...> wrote:

Ive seen a lot of hernias associated with casting over the last decade.

My Liv never got one, but many others have. I believe some will resolve

on their own, but could be mistaken. Please correct me if Im wrong on

this everyone.
