I wouldn't do the break but I would walk by the beach.  I let my son actually walk as long as he didn't throw sand.  Absolutely use a shirt.  Maybe a High neck UV one? Have fun!

Gotta feel the sand between your toes!!I like the idea of the high neck tight shirt too. Also, a hairdryer (on cool setting) is a wonderful tool. I agree with the doc on cast breaks. If your using Early Treatment w/

Mehta casting to cure a childs spine, casts should be applied in solid

block or series with no breaks, or ground could be lost... If your using

Mehta casting an avenue to buy precious growth time and delay surgery,

cast breaks are a must:)

Yes, I'd Much rather have jay spend more time inside at the beach than lose some

of our progress. He's so young, he won't know any different anyway!

Our dr did say that some other doctors that do Mehta casting swear by breaks,

but he definitely does not. It surprises me that some are okay with it, and even

promote it. Anyone know why? Jay always has his cast removed in the afternoon

and the new one applied first thing the following morning.

It depends on where you are.  Kids get more breaks if casting isn't going to cure them and they will be casted long term for maintenance. .  Mehta did not do breaks nor to the doctors she directly trained and follow her method.

The docs on ISOPs Medical Advisory Board, all personally trained in the OR

for 2/3 full days by Mehta (back in 05, 06, & 07) all agree that a solid

block or series of Mehtas specialized EDF is most effective without

breaks, if the goal of ET and casting is to cure...

If the goal of EDF casting is to delay surgery and the child must wear

casts for years, then breaks are necessary. My daughter was in this

category and we would alternate casting in winter, bracing in summer.

This bought her 6.5 yrs of precious growth time prior to surgical

intervention.

Im not sure why cast breaks are being promoted? I certainly understand it

if the child has missed their window at a cure. But, if a child has a

chance to grow straight gently and permanently with Dr. Mehtas ET, then ET

principles must be followed.

Maybe " promoting " was the wrong word... I think he may have just said he knew of

some that did take breaks. Our doctor was trained by dr. Mehta, so that's

probably why he discouraged the break.

same thing. We are thinking of planning a vacation for Christmas, but I wanted

Our daughter is getting her first cast Monday and we are spending a week in up

in Maine in August. I purchased a high neck swim shirt for her to wear so that

we may be able to get a walk on the beach. We'll see. :-) Thanks for posting

this!

Yes, I will! We leave tomorrow morning for vacation. I get to fly solo with a 1

year old and a 2 year old, haha. Wish me luck guys!
