Guest guest
Hello again, My little girl (who has possible scoliosis, still in process of getting her checked out) is now crawling and standing up in her crib and against the sofa etc. Do I need to be concerned that this will be worsening the scoliosis? In other words, should I be discouraging her standing up. I doubt that I should but it just worries me to see her putting so much pressure on her little spine. Thanks for any input. Guest guest
Its true gravity is our worst enemy when it comes to scoliosis. Even if you wanted to you probably would not be able to stop her. I wouldnt want to inhibit her hitting her milestones or give her the feeling that standing is a no no. Its inevitable she will continue to do it so let her have fun! Thats such a cute age!Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID 8 month old standing while holding furniture....is this okay? Guest guest
Hello,Everything depends because there are many things that should be considered, but ....1. It depends how she does it. The best thing would be a visit to a physical therapist, who should take a look at the way she stands up, puts feet on the floor, moves, etc.. Maybe the therapist would help with the way the baby tries to lift herself (to correct the way of lifting the body). Look for someone familiar with e.g. NDT Bobath. Maybe the therapist would have ideas how to change development direction (divert it into some other activities).2. Crawling is very good for neurological development - if you have a possibility to arrange the way your girl is playing so that crawling would be fascinating - do it. Just show her there are plenty of interesting thing on the floor level (and the parents are also lying on the floor when playing) and you can this way postpone a little this natural force to go up (you cannot stop it :-) )3. Swimming pool is also good alternative. If you have a possibility - use it.4. Because of the joints, bones, muscles (and with the scoliosis) the later the better.5. Try to not make ocassions for standing up (don't leave her standing in her crib, play with her on a carpet, use toys like balloons, balls or something that can be chased crawling, etc.).6. Sleeping in prone position - I know about SIDS, but does the risk apply to 8M child, who almost stands up on its own? I think the risk is neglible in that case.7 ....MP From: <davelainer@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 11:05 PM Subject: 8 month old standing while holding furniture....is this okay? Guest guest
Stop? - no, you cannot stop it. Postpone - yes, you can.But instead of saying no it's better to give the feeling that there are many other fascinating things apart from standing. Do not create circumstances when standing is natural activity. Create surrounding for crawling.MP From: "missikay10@..." <missikay10@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 11:59 PM Subject: Re: 8 month old standing while holding furniture....is this okay? Guest guest
I would just let her do what she wants. If the scoli is progressive theres not much to do, but cast early...A New Direction DVD gives tips on how to properly hold an infant so as not to aggravate the curve, but other than that Im not sure theres much you can do. Guest guest
Couldnt hurt...Reminds me of what Dr. Mehta describes as dynamic correction...Doing things to avoid aggravating the curve. Avoiding positions (standing/sitting) that place the curve in a more twisted position. Unfortunately, that article isnt published just yet.. Guest guest
Thanks very much to everybody who responded to my post. I appreciate the advice! mentioned a DVD called A New Direction and I was wondering where I would get a hold of this? I was also wondering whether putting baby in a Baby Bjorn carrier is okay and if so should she face inwards or outwards? Thanks again for any replies. > > I would just let her do what she wants. Guest guest
Yes, you are right. It must be remembered that the force that is straightening or worsening the curve is growth. That's not the gravity itself (gravity applies to other scoliosis - adolescent, grown-ups). The child grows rapidly and if the spine is curved it grows more curved. Or - if the surronding (RVAD - the way the rib cage holds the spine) is correct it straightens on its own. What I was suggesting that simple "not to let stand or lift" is not good idea. The child has to move to develop. But the quality of this motor development may be poor. That was my daughter case (/probalby/ resolving infantile scoliosis, Cobb 15*?) - her first attempts in lifting the body were with the use of spine and back muscles. After physical therapy (showing her the proper moves) she uses her legs to lift the body. I do not know if those problems were caused by scoliosis - maybe, because the gravity center changes, the balance changes. Nevertheles now she stands up propoerly and I do not worry - I can see she does it correctly.MP From: "heather@..." <heather@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Friday, April 20, 2012 7:32 PM Subject: Re: 8 month old standing while holding furniture....is this okay?
