Guest guest
Hi Jane,I would like to know too for next year. I have jaylin covered for his kindergarten year. He goes to the YMCA and with him being in the preschool, they all know him and what he can and can not do. Jaylin can not wipe himself so I had to order him a special tool so he can at school. I think you should talk to your doctor about taking a note to school so its on file. You could always check and see is there is a mirror in the bathrooms at school. If not maybe they could put one on the door if you bring it in? Crisscross applesauce is not our children's friend teachers are pretty good about working with our children at the YMCA, hopefully it's the same in regular school. Can't wait to see what some other parents say :)Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn Apr 30, 2012, at 7:42 PM, "Jane" <janemhar@...> wrote: Another question for parents of older casted kids... What kind of accomodations do you request of the school? I know we'll need a 504 plan, and I'm trying to prepare what I want included. For instance, Grace has a hard time sitting on her bottom on a hard chair for long periods of time, she does better sitting on her knees. Same for on the floor. She can't sit "criss cross applesauce", and can't really sit on her bottom period unless she's laying back against something. Can a take a pillow for her to sit on? Do you have a letter from the doctor indicating activities they can't do? Such as gymnastics in PE, or be allowed to stop running if she gets too overheated. Next week is Grace's casting day and it will be the last chance to talk to the doctor to get documentation if I need any before we meet with her team at the school. Some other problems she has is that she can't always get her pants up over the back of her cast on her own. They said she had to be completely independent for toileting. She can go, wipe, etc on her own, just needs a double check that she got everything covered back up or her dress not tucked in her pants. Help?? Guest guest
My son Aidan is 6 and in Kindergarten. He has been in his cast for about a month and the school has been SO good about it. I didn't take a note in from the doctor, but I don't think it would be a bad idea to have one on file. Aidan's teachers asked a lot of questions and I just told them everything I could think of. I think that if your daughter can use the bathroom on her own and everything I don't think that they would have a problem checking to make sure everything is covered. Also, Aidan's teacher has them sit " criss cross applesauce " on the floor a lot and she is okay with him sitting differently and even asked if I would like to bring in a pillow for him if that would help. I think the more you talk to the teacher about your daughters cast the better. I feel like the school has been very helpful as long as they knew what was going on. Talking to them has also helped people not " baby " him too much. I know he needs a little extra help, but I also don't want people to do everything for him either!! Hope this helps a little!! > > Another question for parents of older casted kids... What kind of accomodations do you request of the school? Guest guest
My son is a toddler so I'm not really sure of the specific needs there, but my husband is a special education teacher & the 504 plan is a perfect way to start. (he deals with lots of these plans) Talk to the school & keep the lines of communication open so that changes can be made if things aren't working for Grace. I'm sure it isn't the first time the school has dealt with a child in some type of brace (but maybe the first cast?). Also I know that not all children are able to toilet by themselves (severe and profound areas of special education) & schools have plans (usually paras) to help there so I wouldn't worry to much about the school finding a way to meet Graces few needs there Best of luck! And yes some kind of documentation from the doctor is never a bad idea. Schools like to get everything down in writing so that they are covered. Guest guest
My son is in second grade and I talked a lot to the teacher about it before he got his cast. Neither of us were sure what to expect. She was more than willing to accommodate. She said he could sit where and however he needed to be comfortable. I didn't get a letter from the doctor but it's never a bad idea. P.E. teacher also just goes with the flow. She is much more cautious about what he does than he is. He is always included in what they are doing but sometimes doesn't do the same thing, sometimes maybe he's running a timer or keeping score. He seems to have fun though!! Also, I took him to back school after hr got his cast when there were no children present to see if he was ok to sit at a desk. He did just fine. The only thing I did was make a cushion for his back at his desk. It just slips over the back of his chair. He didn't ask for it, but after the first few days back at school I noticed his shirts were getting worn were he rubbed his cast against the chair. The cushion solved it. I suggest just talking before she goes...A LOT and it will be pretty smooth. I also work with special ed preschoolers and being forewarned makes everything go better especially for the student!!Best wishes From: Jane <janemhar@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Monday, April 30, 2012 7:42 PM Subject: Q: for parents of school age kiddo's in cast Another question for parents of older casted kids... Guest guest
I think the 504 would be a good idea for Grace. Liv always had one and it really helped ensure her safety and comfort at school. Guest guest
A 504 Plan is a state mandated policy on protecting kids that use adaptable equipment or have special needs at school. Im sure someone else has a more accurate description. Children that wear braces, casts, wheel chair, etc…are able to document in detail exactly what needs your child has. The 504 must be shared with any educator that will come in contact with your child at school in an effort to ensure that your child is safe and that everyone is on the same page….  If the 504 plan is not adhered to, its considered a Civil Rights violation and the school will be held accountable.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of Joy LuedemannSent: Saturday, May 05, 2012 2:17 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: Q: for parents of school age kiddo's in cast What is the 504???Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn May 4, 2012, at 3:49 PM, heather@... wrote: I think the 504 would be a good idea for Grace. Guest guest
Hi heather, Should I look into this for jaylin? He will be going to kindergarten at the YMCA same place where he's been going for preschool. Or, just wait and see where he is at on his castings in 1st grade when he goes to public school.Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn May 14, 2012, at 1:04 PM, " Hyatt" <heather@...> wrote: A 504 Plan is a state mandated policy on protecting kids that use adaptable equipment or have special needs at school.
