She is now in her fifth cast just turned 3 last month and she is down from 49 degrees to less than 15! Its not too late! :)BeckyBecky Stuckless, Sign Language InterpreterDoug Reimneitz519.818.3203From: june_mower2012 <huiqiongzhao@...>Sender: infantile scoliosis treatment Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2012 03:27:00 +0000<infantile scoliosis treatment >Reply infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: I am worried we found it too late Hello All,My son will be 2 this May. Becky,

Thank you very much for replying to my message. I am glad to hear Kylies is

doing better. We are hoping for a similar result for Terrence too.

HI,In Mehta paper (Growth as a corrective force ...) there is an example of a boy who has Cobb 50*, RVAD 24* and is 3y7m (fig. 2) and there is full receover and no relapse till 24y. It means it is possible but ... each child is different. It depends on many factors. So instead of wondering what it would have been if you had discovered it earlier. Try to think what to do now, and be happy it's 2y and not 5y. good luckMP From: june_mower2012 <huiqiongzhao@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2012 5:27 AM Subject: I am worried we found it too late

Don't worry you have a great chance for correction/cure. There are tons of

people on here who started about that time. Mehta is the best option for you

now. My son was 4 when we started and he has really benifited from the process.

My first question would be, what are the numbers and what hospital are you going to?We started casting when he was 17 months, but his curve was 70*. After almost 3 years of casting he is barely under 30*. Now our doctor assures us that he will not need surgery as long as he stays where he is, or continues to improve, but I don't know that he will ever have full correction. We've all seen many older children benefit from Early Treatment w/ Mehtas

specialized EDF casting...Some experienced complete curve resolution and

some used it as an avenue to achieve correction and growth time prior to

surgery.

It really depends on the childs curves/rotation,age, etc...

June,My daughter was 3 years old when we started casting.  We didn't do Mehta casting, though - she was put into a Risser casts.  She had two casts last year (she's 4 now), and then moved into bracing.

Mehta casting wasn't appropriate for her, based on her type of scoliosis.  This was after she was examined by Shriner's SLC.============================ Toneygotmaps@...

He had 58* before putting cast, and 18 * after. Right now he is seeing B.

s s, M.D. in ish Rite Children Hospital. After reading more

and more, I start to understand there are different types of casts. I am

wondering if he has EDF cast which everyone is referring to. The case he has now

does not have shoulder strap, but it does have 2 hole cuts. One is in front and

one is on the side. It is whole up body cast.

Thanks

Hello ,

What are the differences between Mehta casting and Risser casting? I tried to

Google some answers but I could not get clear ideas?

Hi June,My son is 5 now and we found his at 4 and it was 34 degrees. He had his first cast dec. 23, 2011 and it went down to 13 in cast. He got his 2 nd cast a few weeks ago and when they took his cast off it stayed down at 22 degrees :). So after they took an X-ray of his spine with his 2 nd cast its down to 11 degrees :):) so the question to your answer, is no, it's not too late. Your doing the right thing for your son!!!!Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn Apr 9, 2012, at 11:27 PM, "june_mower2012" <huiqiongzhao@...> wrote:

It sounds like he got great correction in his 1st cast, so you seem to be

on the right track. TSRH has an EDF frame, so he has an edf cast.

Remember, this is a slow and gentle process so please try and stay the

course and press on for as many casts as possible to get him down as low

as he can before transferring to a maintenance brace for approx. a year.

Please keep us posted and hang in there.

Sincerely,

HRH

June,

My daughter started casting at 2yrs, 5

months.  She’s in cast #9, and down to around 30 degrees out of cast.  I’m

not sure that anyone can make your concern go away; it’s the same concern

I’ve had.  I can’t go back and change the past.  However, I can

tell you that we decided to ask the dr to keep casting her in the fall after

her second brace break which happens this summer.  Your son’s spine

sounds flexible compared to my daughter’s.  She has never seen that kind

of correction going from out of cast to in cast (58 to 18).  I hope that’s

an indication of good things to come for him!!

Thanks Sherry! He has been doing great. We are so happy to see him adjust to his

new cast and keep learning new things everyday. I will keep posting his progress

and share our stories.
