Guest guest
I went directly to the scource , the pharmaceutical company that makes it . The problem with this drug is that it has been know to cause hepatitic effects , such as drug induced hepatitis and elevated liver enzymes . So because of that reason alone I know of no doctor that would prescribe this for a hepatitis c patient . Therapeutic phlebotomy is the safest and probably the cheapest treatment for us hepatitis c patients who are having problems with iron . Once you start treatment for the hepatitis c iron levels stop rising . But if I didnt have the hep c I sure would want to take the pill . Did your doctor do the genetic screening test to see if your iron overload was from hemachromatosis because if it is not the genetic type then the cause of the iron overload is the hepatitis c . Which is far more controllable than the other . Iron overload drug http://www.seek4info.net/seek4info.php?url=http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2005/NEW01258.html The above is to a site about the FDA approved oral drug…check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks, D
Guest guest
AH>>HAH! What you say makes much sense. No, we haven’t done any genetic tests. We’re just 6 weeks into treatment (genotype 1a)…with the peg interferon & ribavirin (sp?)…..he just mentioned at last appointment that iron was too high and was gonna look into it. Didn’t do much for my confidence in him, I don’t know why I should expect him to know everything! Thanks again…. Guest guest
Lmao ....there is no doc out there alive that knows everything even if they think they do . hehe I am somewhat hard on my doc's I keep them on their toes when it comes to research and treatment options ....I'm so bad my primary care doc says that I intimidate the other doctors . I am a genotype 1a also but alas , I couldnt finish treatment the last time . I have heart problems now so that throws a kink into the whole process . But I was on a newer drug and I was actually almost clear when I had to be taken off treatment. Now I have to wait until I get a pacemaker implanted before I can even think of trying treatment again . And then again I am being watched closely in case I need to transplant .But your doctor doesnt sound half bad especially since he is monitoring your iron levels , that is something that regular GI's dont do and he is researching treatment for your high iron .
