Guest guest
Hi fellow foodies, Did you know raw milk has always been a legal food in MN, enjoyed for generations, but there's an outdated law on the books from the 1940s saying you have to drive to the farm to get it, and only occasionally? Now's our chance to really help the situation because there's a bill that would fix the old restrictions and improve access by giving farmers the freedom to deliver to customers, drop sites, etc. if they want to. This is not a retail bill -- it simply provides for private delivery like other farm foods. JUST THINK, farmers could deliver fresh milk/cheese/butter/yogurt etc. to drop sites, homes, etc. legally and without harassment! It's already a legal food -- we just need it deliverable off the farm. Please consider taking part in some citizen outreach by placing a call and writing a letter to the 2 legislators for your neighborhood/district and the same letter or call to Gov Dayton in the next 1-2 weeks. I heard there's a committee deadline on March 16 and if it doesn't survive past that, it's dead for this year and would have to be reintroduced in a future year. Some of you may have already done this, and some may not, but in either case, legislators have lots on their plates and need a refresher. What to tell them? Pick any of the possible points, like less govt interference in our personal choices, the economic boon for family farms due to the big price difference, stewardship of the land through promotion of grass-based farming, reduced health care costs (did you see that recent study from Europe showing raw milk reduces asthma and allergies?). Or how about less govt spending on enforcing an old law. Most important is to say why it's important to you personally and to your family. I just put a document with possible talking points and legislator contact info in the Files section, if you want something to refer to. Look for " MN Raw Milk Bill flier 2012 " . Please consider speaking up and doing your part to pass it. Cheers, Beth
