I too have had to learn to curb my natural tendency to correct others. With my closest friends I still do it because I think they really do appreciate it and don't take it the wrong way.

I myself always appreciate if someone corrects me - if they do it in a friendly manner - and have therefore been surprised to learn that not everyone appreciates such linguistic helpfulness.
