One last olive oil link that i found and a copy of the relevant bits below:

http://beforeitsnews.com/story/2383/020/Globalization_Hits_an_Olive_Oil_Skid.htm\

l

" The companies producing the fake olive oil are the big names people have

trusted and been paying high prices for: Filippo Berio, Bertolli, Pompeian,

Calavita, Star, Carapelli, Newmans Own Organics, Mezzetta, Mazola, Ray,

Great Value 100%, Safeway Select, 365 100% Italian (Whole Foods), and Bariani.

Found to be producing real olive oil are Kirkland Organic (Imported Costco), and

a series of California companies: Carto Olive Oil (California), California Olive

Ranch, Lucero (California) and McEvoy Ranch Organic (California). "

I tested 365 Organic and Trader Joe's Organic in the fridge- both failed.

Thanks for everyone's Input, this is fascinating! Here's an updated list

and I

deleted the other post to save on redundancy. Remember, just because it

turns

solid does not mean you have A) EV olive oil, or B) Olive oil at all,

there

are other oils which solidify at fridge temps, it only means it's farm

more

likely yours is genuine. A good exercise would be to buy something that

has been

verified to be genuine top notch, real deal EV olive oil, and then use

that as

your gold standard for comparison. And buy artisan. Also take everything

on this

list as hearsay because that is what it is. My mama claims that she has

had

olive oil from Sam's Member's Mark that has solidified, so different

batches

will be different compositions. Which means you can't rely on large

brand names

because of variability in sources. You might buy costco once and get the

real

deal and next time around, not so much. Same with any industrial size

brand

name.

Solidifies when cooled- Possibly Genuine

-Bariani

-Kirkland

-costco brand

-Columela

- Napa Valley Naturals Extra Virgin Organic Olive Oil from

Argentina's Cordoba Valey and California's Sacramento Valley.

Remains Liquid when Cooled - NOT Olive Oil

-Chaffin family orchards ev olive oil

-Trader Joe's Brand

-365 organic

-Alard Palestinian Olive Oil

-Flora, Bija, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

-Member's Mark 100% Organic EVO

-Valley Natural Food's Bulk as of 7.18.12, to be followed upon later.

Ok, that's 2 against Napa Valley Naturals and 1 for it, bizarro!

Also, just an fyi, turns out my Valley Natural Foods EVOO from the bulk section

did solidify, but it took a little over 24 hours for the tiny bottle to do so.

So, if any of you didn't leave it that long, might try doing so!

I feel sheepish, but who'd a thunk it would take over 24 hrs for the fridge to

suck all that warmth out of such a tiny (about 8 oz) measure of material.

Also, at a little over 36 hrs, the sam's club stuff began to precipitate out of

the rest of the liquid, indicating that there's a small amount of OO in there,

and the rest, adulterant, oh well!

I know there's a lot of different takes out there but the test is legit.

Just turns out overnight isn't near long enough. I would recommend a minimum of

36 hours in the fridge. Should happen by about 24, but to be certain, go 36+.

It has to do with the lipid profile and to be honest, I just want real,

organic, unheated, unfiltered olive oil, I don't care to get in to that much

detail on the subject. I think I'll do like you suggest Rebekah and do my soul

and body a favor and stick with small producers who I can talk to personally.

Again, the test is a guarantee you have olive oil, but it can be used to weed

out non olive oils and harshly processed olive oils. Only regarding Extra

virgin, not discussing lesser quality OO's here.

With Kirkland, sounds like they can get some really good batches, and possibly

some not so good.
