Guest guest
Wilderness Family Naturals has coconut oil; you can order online and they deliver it. They also have a coconut-olive oil mayo > > I'm new to the boards. We got a bottle of Spectrum expeller-pressed organic coconut oil from the co-op and have been adding it to smoothies and cooking with it. However, I see that it's refined. Is this typical for this type of oil, or should I be looking for unrefined? (What I have is all I saw at Seward, and it wasn't cheap.) I've also heard people talk about Virgin coconut oil, but I was never quite sure what that was -- does it have to do with whether it's refined or not? > > Thanks so much! Guest guest
Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! I'm still a little confused, though -- I'm assuming that the Wilderness brand is better than what I've been using; is that because it's unrefined? Or...? Should I not use the Spectrum stuff I have? Guest guest
Wilderness family coconut oil is unprocessed which means it is the best in nutrition, you are right!! your spectrum kind is not bad though, you can use it in dishes that you don't want a coconut flavor. -caroline

Guest guest
Welcome to the group, ! How I generally explain the refined vs. unrefined coconut oil question ( & this actually applies to most foods anyway) is that the less it's processed, the better! If it's refined, more of the good stuff has been taken out. If you were to open both jars of coconut oil side-by-side, you'd find one has the heavenly coconut scent (unrefined) and that the other just...doesn't. The only time I'd ever say, " sure, go for the refined coconut oil " is if it's someone who has a big aversion to the smell and taste of coconut...but if that's the case, I'd say, cook it in butter (or even *gasp* lard!)! I buy a number of different brands of coconut oil, but tend to buy the virgin coconut oil from Nutiva through Vitaminshoppe.com since it doesn't break the bank. Becca One question I have is about coconut oil. We got a bottle of Spectrum > expeller-pressed organic coconut oil from the co-op and have been adding it > to smoothies and cooking with it. Guest guest
What part of the store were you looking in? Seward Co-op has Nutiva, Dr Bonners, Spectrum ... those three for sure I am almost positive. They have some oils in the " vitamin " area but the coconut oil is in the last row before the frozen foods on the bottom shelf under the olive oils and such. Watch for sales. I was able to buy several jars of Nutiva at Whole Foods recently for like 7 or 8 bucks a jar. Also, Spectrum as refined and unrefined. I think one of the selling points for the refined is a higher smoke temp. Not sure if Seward carries both though, I only tend to but unrefined. I am a member of and shop at Seward, The Wedge, both Mississippi Mkts and shop at Whole Foods sometimes too depending on what I am shopping for. Sales on coconut are fairly frequent at either the co-ops or Whole Foods. Also I seem to recall coconut oil coupons in the Chinook Book if you have one of those. Guest guest
Seward has lots of coconut oil choices, not just Spectrum. I wouldn't use refined coconut oil, BTW. Even if you're cooking with it afterwards, personally I'd still use EVCO. If you pick up a copy of Chinook Book coupons (on sale at coops and Whole Foods-WF), there are several for EVCO. Plus CB has an app this year, so double coupons! Cheapest options outside of coupons are probably TJ's organic EVCO, as someone mentioned (not sure what temp this is monitored at) and WF's store brand 365 organic EVCO, which I have written to WF corporate and received the answer that they keep temps below 119. I think WF and TJ are about the same in price, but I guess I tend to find that WF quality for store brand is above that of TJ. And last time they checked they were about the same or lower in price than bulk EVCO from WFN. It was a while ago that I looked into it and at the time I had very limited storage space so that factored into it too. Faith
Guest guest
Thanks everyone, for the advice and sources! Don't know how I missed the selection at Seward, but I'm going back tomorrow so I guess I'll pick up something new. I hate to do it (because of the cost), but I don't want to use something for health that's perhaps not that healthful...
Guest guest
119 degrees does not equate to RAW anything. Our members have access to RAW WFN at $11 per qt. Coupons are just smoke and mirrors that end up paying for advertising. Spend your food dollars on food and avoid the confusion. Be well, Alvin > > Seward has lots of coconut oil choices, not just Spectrum. I wouldn't use refined coconut oil, BTW. Even if you're cooking with it afterwards, personally I'd still use EVCO. Guest guest
I can vouch for the quality of Alvin's coconut oil. Most excellent flavor and it has now replaced all of the lotions and cremes in the house as well. With the bulk pricing he can offer you can find many uses for it around the house- the hard part is keeping the kids from eating the portion I keep in the medicine cabinet for my face Natasha
Guest guest
Please, be careful who you give credit to here. The folks at WFN have spent a lot of time and energy to find a consistent and quality source of CO. The idea that through of our private food club, Freedom Farms Coop members and their families have access to bulk values does not go un-noticed by our food regulators. This is why I have the chance to explain this private status in court in May. It is time to demand our right to high quality food and efficient delivery. It's time to stop asking for permission to be healthy - physically, spiritually and economically. Have a healthy, Happy Easter. Alvin I can vouch for the quality of Alvin's coconut oil.
