Kefir could do you and your baby much good. There is no probiotic like it.

Plenty of us have kefir grains to share. Just ask No need to hassle with

starter packs.

It sounds like we answer to the same Maker so I appreciate your comments about

grain. I've thought about that quite a bit and here's where I've landed.

First, grain (especially wheat) has little in common with the wheat of biblical

times thanks to man's intervention. Consider reading the book " Wheat Bellies "

that has been discussed in this group. Second, even traditional societies that

were largely grain based had horrific health outcomes. Egyptians are a famous

example of this. Third, the larger context of our diet is much different than

biblical times. Insulin insensitivity is a matter of total exposure to insulin

over time. Even us who are die hard tradies probably grew up on a grain and

sugar carb rich diet. No group of people has ever come close the access and

consumption of mass grain and sugar carbs like us. Despite the fact that I am

once again insulin sensitive and lean (despite over 4,000 calories a day) my

insulin insensitivity and body fat would come back with a vengance if I ever

indulged in carbs again. I do have a little bit of a natural sweetener or a

traditionally prepared grain once or twice a week as a treat but always with a

heavy helping of a traditional fat. Fourth, grains are low nutrient density.

Animal products and vegetables offer all the nutrients offered by grain in

greater density and superior bio-availability without playing Russian Roulette

with insulin resistance.

Last thought, the blood sugar rush that follows grain/sugar/starch carbs is

literally addictive. It activates the same pleasure regions of the brain that

many drugs do. I find that many people are interested in talking about

nutrition until you threaten their carbs. They get huffy and suddenly and

firmly disinterested. They are addicted. I was and had no idea until I was no

longer addicted and could reflect back on my thoughts and cravings. If you are

addicted and want to consider breaking it, many people have found success with a

diet rich in traditional fats, animal protein, veggies and absolutely no grains

or sugar for at least 5 consecutive days.

healthy body is populated by beneficial flora that live in harmony with us in

the skin, mucus membranes, vagina, bladder, urethra, everywhere in the body. But

if you’ve been on a lot of antibiotics, if there are environmental

toxins, stress, a bad diet, or all these things, your body flora changes. Good

bacteria are gone and it opens the gate for pathogens. The first thing you might

see is oftencandida and other yeasts that cause thrush.

Ironbound Island online has bulk orders for many of these, perhaps you could

even find some people on here who'd like to go in with you. United Noodle also

has these locally and inexpensively and your coops and Whole Foods will carry

some varieties too. You might want to be a bit careful about buying stuff

sourced in Japan, though, considering their radiation problems. Ironbound is

all hand-harvested from ME.

I just found this on a forum:

[YEA] 09/08/2011: Jade from Dallas, Tx writes: " While I was nursing my baby we

both got thrush. It was very painful to nurse. I started just pumping and bottle

feeding. A friend of mine said thrush is a fungus and to try extra virgin

coconut oil. I put it on as a topical on my affected area. And after a few

minutes I would nurse. Not only did the oil add more relief than the lanolin

during the actual nursing, but within days the thrush was gone. I continued to

use it for my mosturizer and we never had thrush again.

Since it helped there I suggested my husband use it on his toe nails. He had 2

that I was guessing were infected with fungus. They grew so thick I would file

the tops of them so they looked less gross. It took awhile because the nails had

to grow out. One was completely healed and one still looks a little funky but is

half the size. I think he stopped using it too early on that toe (it was worse

than the other to start with).

I have also used it on diaper rashes as sometimes those are caused by fungus. It

had helped several times on those. "

Me again - I take a TBSP of good quality olive oil in hot water, with about 1/2

tsp sea salt (for adrenal support) and a dash of lemon juice every morning. I

get my oil at Annona Gourmet, and they have amazing varieties, that taste like

butter, and grass. I love it, and it also gets a good dose of fat in me in the

morning, my skin and hair are showing the results, and with the cream in my

coffee, I don't get hungry until later in the day. I love the good oil, but the

Costco organic is just fine too.

I also take high dose iodine, but you would not want to start that while

nursing, since you don't want to start a detox. I think you could safely take a

couple of drops of Lugol's 2%, in a non-citrus juice, and probably benefit a lot

from that. You want to be sure you are getting lots of vitamin C, and magnesium

is a big one, too.

Another post, with specifics about GSE program:

GSE is extremely effective in the treatment of thrush. I also find it to be the

easiest place to start. If used diligently, it typically will clear up thrush

within a couple of days.

Treatment of thrush with GSE

Make a mixture of 10 drops of Citricidal Grapefruit Seed Extract to one

ounce of water. The use of distilled water to make your solution is very

important. The chemicals placed in your local tap water to kill bacteria can

reduce the effectiveness of the active ingredients in GSE.

IF thrush is not markedly improved by the second day, increase the mixture

to 15, or even 20 drops of GSE per one ounce of distilled water. If after

reaching up to at least 20, and a full day of hourly treatment with it, you see

no improvement, I would consider using Diflucan. If you are prescribed

Diflucan, continue to treat topically with GSE during the course of treatment.

Use this solution with an absorbent swab on mom's nipples and baby's mouth

once every hour during all waking hours. Swab baby's mouth priorto nursing and

mom's nipples after nursing. Applying it to baby's mouth prior to nursing will

help them to avoid the possibility of baby associating the bitter taste with

nursing.

If diaper area is affected, put the same strength solution into a spray

bottle or swab as above at every diaper change.

If the infection is particularly rampant or you are having difficulty

getting rid of it, mom may need to take acidophilus or GSE capsules to get rid

of it systemically.

GSE solution can also be used in laundry or as a surface cleaner to kill

yeast hiding and waiting to multiply again.

It may be necessary for Mom to eliminate sugar from her diet until the yeast

infection is gone.

If treatment with GSE seems to leave your nipple area dry, I suggest applying a

light coating of Vitamin E oil in the following manner: First apply the GSE

solution, allow that to dry or use a hairdryer to dry it completely, then apply

a light coating of Vitamin E oil. I would suggest doing this 3 to 4 times a day

until the dryness is gone. It should only take a couple of days to show

significant improvement. The Vitamin E oil should absorb into the skin

thoroughly prior to the nursing following the application. I'm a big fan of

Lansinoh, but do not use it when dealing with thrush, because it provides a

moisture barrier that is counterproductive to getting rid of thrush.

Since learning of the powerful antimicrobial that Grapefruit Seed Extract is, I

have always kept a bottle in my home for many uses.

Contact me off group and we'll see if we connect to get you a grain. And yes,

sour milk works for kefir. If its very sour, it won't work because the sugar

that the kefir needs is gone. But soured milk (from raw milk of course) is also

a probiotic (just not as good)and can bu used like kefir.
