Sorry about that, sent the other post without typing anything. Stories like that aren't uncommon. When a more advanced culture meets a less advanced culture (technologically speaking) two things invariably happen: the less advanced culture gets absorbed by the other or there is war in which one or the other is destroyed. Some native Americans were absorbed more or less while others found war. This was not limited to North America. Indeed the natives in what is now Latin America had it much worse under the Spanish with some cultures being so thoroughly destroyed they vanished from history until recently. One example of that is the Amazonian "empire": a native culture with very advanced agriculture that reached from the mouth of the Amazon River to nearly its headlands and probably numbered in the millions. Disease is probably what wiped them out, perhaps accidently. Africa and Asia have seen the same as well, including many episodes of more advanced or just more ruthless native tribes wiping out others. Indeed China came close to ceasing to be when it was conquored by the Mongols. The Khan (I don't recall which one) wanted to kill all the people so his horses could have unrestricted grazing land, but he was persuaded that having live people to do the work, make things for the tribes and produce taxes would be better the Khan than more grassland. If not for that decision, Chinese culture could well have been extinguished then and there. Other people to the west weren't as lucky and were completely wiped out by the Mongol hordes. " Actually the Abenaki were a far more advanced culture insofar as we had a democratic society where men and women were equal in decisions for the village. Then came the Europeans and we were stripped of our ways and forced to live the way Europeans dictated to us. Our democratic rights were taken from us until almost 50 years ago, when Aboriginals were finally 'allowed' to vote in elections. We weren't absorbed because of being a less advanced culture, we were bullied by ignorant bullies who arrived in numbers, wiped out great numbers of our people with diseases and bad lifestyles (ie. alcohol), and acted like they owned the world. We weren't destroyed because we knew that Great Spirit had a plan, even if we did not understand these Dark Times. Raven

What do you (you individually - and/or Native Americans generally) see as the Great Spirit's plan with regard to these Dark Times? Guest guest
Kate, if I thought for a minute that your question was sincere, I would answer it. However, I have my reservations (pardon the pun) about your reasons for asking and will decline answering until I know what your motives are. Guest guest
Raven, I asked sincerely. I have one motive for asking: to know how Native Americans understand those evil events.
