Guest guest
Hi Jim! Congratulations on getting hooked up and on your way to healing! I'm so sorry about your singing, but, since you just had major surgery, I would like to suggest that you give it some more time. You may soon regain all that seems to be lost! Hugs and blessings, Ann
Guest guest
Well, I mean I COULD NOT SING. I > croaked and was flat and had about a 3 note range. Anyone else out there > have any similar experience? > Jim ================================= I don't know Jim...I can now sing as bad as I did before DS. lol Since I'm not, never have been and never will be a singer take this for what is it worth....I can't cough with the same force that I could before surgery. I have noticed this in others (especially RNYers) I think it has some connection to the stomach being smaller and not being able to muster up the force of air. Could this be affecting your singing...not being able to project the air as you were used to.... Just an idea Jo

Guest guest
Jim I hate to sound like a ding bat but what is the pump for I have been gone did you have another surgery ? hope all goes well and that your singing voice returns amber Jim's Dazed Hello everyone out there in DS land. I was hooked up yesterday (and I don't mean I found a new dope dealer, either!). It only took 3 hours to get the job done. The training nurse said that the first time always takes forever, but it should be less than 45 minutes from now on. The pump is working well. When they finally turned it on, and plugged the one leak in the dressing, in about 2 seconds that thing sucked about 1/2 a cup of crud out of my wound. I was shocked! I have to get used to, and figure out how to, having the machine on me all the time. Going out yesterday was a job because I had to figure out how to do it right and where to put the tubing so it wasn't dragging the ground behind me like some creature from the Black Lagoon. I walked around campus and bought the new parking permit and had a new photo ID taken (108 pounds lost makes a big difference in the picture, right Pat???). I was exhausted when I got home. I hope I can survive returning to classes on 22 September! Now, I have a question. At a choral rehearsal last night, I sang for the first time since my DS in December. Well, I mean I COULD NOT SING. I croaked and was flat and had about a 3 note range. Anyone else out there have any similar experience? Marta, is there a medical explanation for this? I made my living on my voice, and even when I've had the flu or laryngitis, I could sing. So, I'm really, REALLY depressed about this new development. Ok, I await with bated breath your sage advice and council. Jim

It made me winded and dizzy. Now, I am not a singer, but I do / well did/ like to dance. But since I have lost my weight it is harder to shake my booty than it was before. I had rythm before now I am at a loss...I cant dance...lol the changes we go thru...lol Sharon in Onyx who had some one who didnt know I had been big (read- super morbidly obese) before tell me I wouldnt understand what she was talking about because I was skinny.... can you imagine!?! I've done a lot of singing in the past and I must admit, I've noticed that I don't have the power or the range that I used to. It's very frustrating. I think Jo may be onto something about not having the ability to take those big breaths like we used to. Do our diaphrams get smaller with weight loss? I'll let you know what Dr. K says about the " can't sing " dilemma. Guest guest
Hi Sharon! I don't believe for a second that you can't sing. EVERYONE can be taught to sing. It's a skill that can be learned like any other skill. And you have such a sweet speaking voice that I'm sure you'd have a wonderful singing voice. Hugs! Guest guest
Mel et al, the poster didn't mean that I was being disrespectful, but rather that the poster felt it was not showing adequate respect for him. And, I respect the posters opinion. So, let's not rag on that poster's opinion. I brought it up because if one person says something, it's a good bet others feel the same way. I wanted to clear up any possible misunderstanding. You bring up an interesting point, too. I've always-from the 2nd meeting with him, called him Dr. K, even before I was subscribed to the list. I think I heard someone in the office call him Dr. K, and having grown up with at " Father B " it was just natural to call him Dr. K. I have resisted the urge to call him by his first name! Most of our office visits are not medical related chat. I really enjoy getting to know about him. Next visit, he is going to show me the correct way to tie a bow tie. He doesn't know that yet, though! LOL Jim _____ From: MDL1031@... We all call Dr K our switch Daddy and we are all switch siblings. I bet he knows we cakk him that and is amused by ikt...LOL. I had a hard time calling him Dr Keshishian in Delano because I had call him Dr K online for many, many months....LOL. It embarassed me because I kept slipping up and calling him Dr K. But he was very OK with i and Dee thought it was funny and calls him Dr K. I bet we could ask him and he'd say there are a lot worse things to be called than Daddy K.....(Like the names I call my RNY doc....LOL) Mel
Guest guest
> Mel et al, the poster didn't mean that I was being disrespectful, but rather that the poster felt it was not showing adequate respect for him. > Jim Okay, Switch brothers and Sisters, A little update on how this all got started. I got on the main DS board 2 1/2 years ago. They were all calling each other switch sisters and brothers. So while I was in a drug induced haze visiting with our beloved Jo (who came to see me in the hospital) ..the subject was brought up that if we were all switch sibs does that make Dr K (which I have always called him to his face, and he never seemed to mind- especially since the office staff has always called him that- and it seems kinder than butchering his full name by misprunuciation) our switch daddy. So I told Jo...well we will just have to ask him. And we did. He got all flustered until I told him that we were all old enough and didnt require raising (although this has been disputed), and would not require child support...lol then he thought it was funny. The pic I gave him of the 4 of us who were all in the Shilo together Christmas 2001 - has an inscription - to our switchdaddy Dr K. He loved the pic...(we were all sitting around a table with 4 aces in our hands, cigars in our mouths and glasses of water on the table.) We all were winners! Dr K has a great sense of humor and love for us all, and he knows that we kid him out of our fondness and love, and respect for him. There is none better... Sharon in Onyx who swears that Jo made her do it!

I had been calling him Switchdaddy behind his back for months....Sharon was the first to say it to his face...lol...it didn't take much to nudge her in that direction. As far as calling him Dr. K....Dee was the first to tell me to call him that. I asked her how to pronounce his name...she told me...I said " ok, that's going to take some practice " She laughed and said " just call him Dr. K, everyone does " . To the person who felt Jim was being disrespectful....We who have been here all along know that was not Jim's intend, nor is it ours. However I do understand your point....it's like teaching your kids to call a family member " Aunt " ...instead of just . Dr. Keshishian encourages the feeling of community " family " we have.
