Hi Traci,

I wasn't quite as angry as you at the program on Discovery but I

definitely felt it was a pretty big waste of time. The only thing I

think they mentioned that was important was that after weight loss

surgery, the one guy changed his eating habits and exercised. True,

with the DS we don't have to change our eating habits as drastically

and we probably will lose even without exercise, but the best results

come with a combination of both. I just wish, like you, that they

had mentioned the DS as a possible surgery. It's just so infuriating

when these so called " reporters " don't investigate the entire story.

I did want to tell you that I think your letter was very well written

and hopefully, it will get their attention and encourage them to do a

new and more informed story.

Guys, I am not surprised that they have never heard of the DS. Just

two years ago in the fall, I was researching WLS for a friend and I

did not stumble across the DS. Now, I am a doctor and if I didn't

find it, imagine how much harder it would be for a reporter.

Of course, I used the search engine for medical articles, maybe with

the internet I would have found it.

VERY TRUE. IF IT WASNT FOR YOU, I WOULDNT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT

EITHER. I HAVE POPPED INTO OTHER GROUPS AND I FOUND A GASTRIC BYPASS

ONE. I STARTED READING SOME OF THE POSTS. YOU SHOULD HEAR THESE

THINGS. SOME ARE GREAT BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE POUCHES NO LONGER IN

TACT, A LOT OF VOMITING OF BLOOD, AND TISSUE WRAPPED AROUND SUTURES

(IS THAT RIGHT?). SO MANY THINGS THAT ARE DIFFERENT. PLUS- THERE ARE

A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE 4 AND 5 YEARS OUT AND THEY ARE GAINING WAIT

BACK. IM BEING NOSEY- HAD TO POP IN. ANYWAY- I WISH MORE PEOPLE

WOULD LEARN ABOUT THE GASTRIC BYPASS. ITS SO MUCH BETTER. I WAS

READING HOW AND WHY THIS SURGERY WAS ORIGINALLY DONE AND ITS

AWESOME. THE GASTRIC BYPASS SOUNDS A LITTLE SCARY BECAUSE OF WHAT IS

DONE WITH THE PROCEDURE.

Go

THATS WHY I JOINED THE OTHER GROUP. I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO COMPARE

SO THAT WHEN PEOPLE TALK TO ME, I CAN SAY " THIS IS WHY I CHOSE THIS

SURGERY........HAVE YOU HEARD THIS IS SAFER BECAUSE............? " I

COULDNT BELIEVE ALL I WAS HEARING. WITH THE DS, YOU DONT HEAR ABOUT

THESE PROBLEMS OR REVISIONS. YOU CAN HAVE COMPLICATIONS WITH ANY

SURGERY BUT THE DS IS NOT ANYMORE RISKY THAN ANY OTHER SURGERY IN MY

BOOK. THEY ORIGINALLY DID THE DS FOR STOMACH PROBLEMS AND FOUND OUT

PEOPLE LOST WEIGHT FROM IT. SO FROM THE BEGINNING, THIS SURGERY WAS

DONE TO HELP PEOPLE AND THATS ONE OF THE REASONS I CHOSE THIS- AMONG

A LOT OF OTHER REASONS. MAYBE BY OUR WORD OF MOUTH, WE CAN EDUCATE

PEOPLE BECAUSE THE MEDIA HAS THEIR HEAD UP THEIR BUTT (SORRY)

I remember finally finding the AMOS site and reading about the DS. I

thought it was some kind of joke because it sounded too good to be true.

This, thankfully, is one thing that wasn't (too good to be true).

Best -

Nick
