Autism!!

Holy COW! I did a search for " autism " in this group and it hit like

crazy. Our son, too, is autistic. His official diagnosis is Asperger

Syndrome, but it is one of the Pervasive development Disorders along

with autism.

I've been saying for some time there has to be a connection. This past

week, I went to a local autism conference. They had a doctor [who

coincidentally, our Ped is sending us too] who specializes in the

biomedical connection of Autism Spectrum Disorders and Immune System

problems.

Here's the gist of his findings:

The babies are affected by environmental toxins [pesticides, heavy

metals, etc.] in the womb via the mother's exposure. Some of these

babies [unknown if it's a gene or not] are more susceptible to these

toxins. Because of this, their immune systems go into overtime creating

too many antibodies which then go and kill off needed important proteins

that are crucial for brain development. Additionally, they attack

important gut flora which is crucial for proper digestive development.

He said that basically all the kids on the spectrum either have Heavy

Metal poisoning or Gastro problems. We obviously fit into the gastro

subtype.

So anyway, mainstream medicine has NOT fully accepted this. However,

this doctor claims all of this is scientifically proven and politics

have kept it controversial. He is not a DAN doctor [for those familiar

with Defeat Autism Now]. He doesn't believe that HBO or chelation is

necessary. But dietary interventions are crucial.

We've haven't seen him yet. But I well imagine once we finally get it,

we'll be Gluten and Dairy free. So I'm letting DS get his fill of

Poptarts which he can [grin].
