Hello everyone....

We are very fortunate that our ten year old son with HFA has never had any real issues with OCD, or even had items that he was overly obsessed with/interested in. However, he has recently developed what I can only describe as a phobia towards cartoons. Yes, I said Cartoons. He has always loved cartoons, and game cube, etc. But now he is clearly afraid to watch cartoons on television and the other day at a restaurant he was extremely upset and scared because a child walked in wearing a cartoon character shirt. He really NEEDED to leave the restaurant. So you can see how this can become quite debilitating quickly. He is now terrified of the murals on the school walls and will put his arm up to block him from seeing the murals. This seems to be more of a phobia than an OCD, I think.

But then he has also recently decided that he is terrified of one of the two black leather sofas in our family room. Yes, both sofas are identical, but he is truly terrified to touch and you can just forget the thought of sitting on it. Now this sounds a bit OCD to me.

I am not sure what to do about this....short of buying him a new wardrobe and never going anywhere...as cartoons are everywhere. He has done so well and its bizarre that at age ten and a half he would develop these reactions. Has anyone else experienced this?

I hate to go down the anti-anxiety route, and know that Prozac is an option. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
