Dear Jill,

The ozone probably won't hurt anything in one afternoon, but it will not

get the mould that is under the surface.

The only way to get the mould is by ozone contact. If you wrapped it in

a big plastic bag and ozonated that for a few days, MAYBE it could get at

all the mould.

Otherwise I would suggest your couch is going to have to go...

Best of health!

Subject: Question about mold in environment

Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 01:00:51 -0000

I just got a beautiful but used velvet couch, from a couple down the

street. I smelled mold in their apartment and not surprisingly the

mother and her little toddler both have frequent sinus infections as

does the super (a very fancy apartment).

Having gotten the couch home today I smell mold emanating from part

of it. Seems to me it's not just on the surface although I'm

sensitive (for instance, I can smell mold on paper sometimes. Nenah

once sent me a copy of her sauna book on paper before it was

published and it smelled very moldy to me and I sent it back. I also

got 20 reams of paper on sale online and when they were shipped to

me, they all must have some aspergillus mold on them, I can smell it,

but I'm using them anyway).

The question I have--for Saul or anybody--if I ozonate my entire

livingroom with my ozone (Saul's ozone) machine, how much will that

affect my couch? I assume it will get rid fo the mold spores that

are in the air now from the couch and might not be a bad idea anyway,

but according to my friend Byorn it won't penetrate INTO the couch if

the mold for instance is in the foam cushions and stuff inside the

couch.

Anybody know or try this? I was thinkign if I put the tubing up near

the couch it might really work anyway. However my hyperbaric chamber

is in this room also, it hasn't seemed to be hurt by my ozone sauna,

even when I tried to outgas the new one of styrene, before I traded

with Arthur; and I'd close it up etc, but I definitley do not want to

injure my chamber...so my questions are

1) WIll ozonating my entire room with Saul's machine for a couple

hours hurt anything? How about for a whole afternoon?

2) How much will I affect the couch and the mold emanating from it

which I suspect is on more than the surface

I am going to get rid of this gorgeous couch, since it was free, I'll

have to buy a new one. In any case i just came home and already my

lungs are bothering me. It is not worth it to test it with ozone.

SOB SOB :(((((

Going to find my super now to see if they can get it out of my

apartment.

Oh well there are worse tragedies in life.

Hi Jill,

I used ozone to detoxify my new leather couch last spring, though it

was a cheap unit that uses room air, and in addition I used a device

that Hulda uses for killing organisms and detoxing toxins in

food.

I have been chemically sensitive for many years and the day that they

delivered the couch I made them close the front door because it stunk

so bad in here that I thought diesel exhaust from the delivery truck

was coming through the door.

It turned out when they left that, to my horror, the smell was from

the couch itself.

We tried to put it outside the next day but it was too tight a fit

for my husband and son to get it through the doorway.

I decided that before we paid someone to come and move it out, I

would try my Portazone and food zappicator. It took me a week or two

of bagging up and taping the cushions in oversized garbage bags and

wrapping the couch itself with painter's plastic cloth. Each day I

did a new area on the couch.

I stopped before I really got the whole couch treated...the smell was

almost indistinguishable and by that time it was warm enough outside

to open the windows.

I will probably do it again before I have to close the windows for

the winter.
