Guest guest
Hi , I'm from Brisbane, loved reading your great story about Christmas, where did you find a Santa that could sign? I'm a teacher Aide who works in a regular state school with some special needs children and this site is teaching me more than I will ever learn on any courses. I have just finished reading Dr Stordy's book and our family have begun taking proefa just because I wanted to try what I believe I am going to be talking about a lot with various people here. Thanks to every one for helping me to understand our special children better. Have a happy and special new year Warm (veeeeeeery warm its been 39 deg C) regards T > Hi everyone > Isn't it stange that sometimes things work out much better than we imagine. We had a great Christmas. My son Corey is nearly 2 and has verbal dyspraxia. I have had only a few months of dealing with the dx before Christmas and the big family gatherings and the inevitable comparisions of the cousins. Luckily Corey has found signing easy to learn and now has about 120 signs (including " Santa " , " Christmas Tree " , " Reindeer " , " presents " and names of our close family) (we use Makaton but make up signs too). The Santa at the local shopping center knew sign language and understood Corey's very long wish list and even signed to him. On Christmas day Corey entertained his older cousins by " teaching " them his signs. The whole family now asks for lollies by signing as it is such a cute sign (Shirley Temple-like finger twist on your cheek). Corey also wore a Santa hat and handed out some of the gifts. He played happily with his cars, lining them up and telling them to stop and go (with signs of course). He even slept the whole way home in the car (nearly 3 hours). > Yes he may have problems learning to talk, but most of the time he is my precious angel. > > Mum to Corey (1.11) > Western Austalia > (any other Aussies out there??)
