Guest guest
I also have an as needed prescription for Xanax. I've been getting perimenopause anxiety on a " monthly " basis. So I had it for that. The dr. said to use as needed for outside stress that became just too much when all of this started. I hardly ever take it now. But, it sure helped me not fall apart all of the time when we were in crisis mode. I got it from my primary care dr. I'm very careful too, but I've noticed it helps me feel normal when things are bad, not high or anything. It sometimes helped me kind of take myself out of the situation when he was in a major panic or meltdown. Not take myself out, but distance myself enough that I could be with him and help without wallowing in my own despair about it. kwim? J Re: Xanax for mom Just wondering if anyones kids have taken Xanax or something like it? Its strange because my son has really been doing better the last couple of weeks but my nerves have just been shot this last 6 months. I have tried everything to get a grip and nothing seems to work. I go to the psychologist and his cognitive therapy will give me some relief for maybe two days until something else hits. I am not OCD and usually can handle more stress than most. Anyway, I finally went to a pschiatrist for myself and he just gave me Xanax. Wow!! I am a different person back to who I use to be years ago. I am realizing now how much this has all affected me as mom for years, way before the diagnoses. If is feeling soo good to actually be able to get things done and not live in a fog. Anyway, my son keeps saying that he feels like throwing up all day at school, which I now can relate as I have developed stress also. Started wondering if kids can take this. What I like about it is I am only taking as needed, works instantly and you don't have to go through the 6 week wait. I do realize that it can be addictive, doctors keep assuring me that if I don't up the dose or take constantly I will be fine. I am hoping for myself and wondering for my son if something like this can just trigger your brain back on track and then take yourself off it. Well, just curious on your thoughts! Guest guest
The only negative I have gotten from it is that it totally knocked me out for 2 hours when I first took it. I know for now, I can't take it if I need to be doing something at first. I am assuming that side affect will go away in time. I have been waking up at night around 2am and up the rest of the night for the last 6 months. I wonder if my body is just trying to catch up on much needed sleep. I am glad to hear that you don't take it much now. I am very worried about addictions, not what mom or our family needs right now! Guest guest
I only took a half of the lowest dosage pill, unless I knew I had back up (dh) or was going to bed soon. If I wasn't better, I would take the other half. I never drive, ever. Now, I know someone who takes it more often and can drive and function well-- she says. I wouldn't put my child with her or myself in the car, though. I was having perimenopausal palpitations, and they would make me panic and it would spiral into a panic attack. Now that I know what the palpitations are, and they are not dangerous, I had a ekg, they don't bother me as much. I still get anxiety monthly, had it yesterday, and I sometimes take a half just to not feel like I'm jumping out of my skin. It is hormonal, happens like clockwork each month. When we were in the throws of Pandas or OCD, still not sure which one we are dealing with, it helped me so much. Just temporarily. I was crying constantly, or my mind would reel with the what-ifs. If you are conscious and careful you should be fine. I kind of kept track when I was taking it for crisis stress. Just so I could be sure it wasn't a problem for me. That I didn't need to add to the mix. Remember!!! Take care of yourself. Self care is critical for everyone, especially you. Find some nice ways to do little special things for yourself, massages, lunch with a friend, it is so important, or you will not be able to take care of your family as well. When momma ain't happy, nobody ain't happy!!! J Re: Xanax for mom Just wondering if anyones kids have taken Xanax or something like it? Guest guest
Adele, I took Xanax for a short time for insomnia a couple of years ago. I would wake after a couple of hours (around 1 or 2 am.) and not be able to fall back to sleep. I started taking the Xanax in the middle of the night and it worked great. I wouldn't be worried about a short term addiction or anything. I now take Klonopin if I can't sleep and it works great too. Dina
Guest guest
AMEN to mom having to take care of herself!! I kept telling my psychologist that we had to get me better if he wanted me to do the things I needed like discipline for my son. Lets face it, it is really hard to outsmart and discipline a child and be consistant when your head is in a fog and you feel like you are carrying a 20 pound weight around your chest! Ha! I was very careful yesterday to not go anywhere as I tried this xanax, that is really the down side to it. But I did take a whole pill and might just try and half next time and see who that goes. Thanks Adele _____
Guest guest
We have a bottle of Xanax that I am suppose to use if my girls get out of control. I always forget about it until the next day! We also have a bottle of Ambien. I think I've given one Xanax to my 15 year old at her request and I know I've given several of the Ambien. Guest guest
Yes, my doctor prescribed it to me " as needed " basis. You can take just one pill as a adult. I would be very careful with a child and from this last post these kids are teenagers not younger, wonder if that makes a big difference. Warning, for me it just knocks me out to go to sleep and then when I wake up I feel great. I am starting to wonder if the pill is helping my anxiety or is it just the pill finally letting me sleep that is really whats helping. We have an appointment with a child psychiatrist for my 9 year old in a couple of weeks and I would love to see him prescribe a " as needed " pill. So much less stressful. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of autumn71A@... Guest guest
I will say that I love Xanax. Kind of in the way I love my husband or children and that is my primary problem with the drug. Some people have more of an addictive personality than others. If you can take it and not count the hours til your next dose, not count the pills, not wonder where your next script is coming from then good for you! Cause I can't. I think that is why they dont prescribe it to young people. But it does work. And sometimes, now that you mention it, it would seem like a Godsend to some kids. I think that I just gave you guys far too much information about me and my past... " autumn71A@... Guest guest
I don't know how often it is used but we do have a prescription for Xanax to use if my girls get really going on being upset and just can't get over it. Hannah, the oldest, is fifteen and she's the one I've given it to. She has compulsions to watch things on tv (Avatar is the new one for her) and if she can't and the obsession is really bothering her, she can get quite upset. We had a nasty battle one night when she just could not let it go and that's when the doctor gave us the pills. The Ambien is mostly for my youngest daugther. I usually give it to her when we are camping or traveling because she has a tendency to get really overwhelmed and then can't sleep. The thing with the Xanax is that I don't think it is suppose to be for every day use. It did make my daughter sleepy and I am sure that a person can become addicted to it. It is wonderful though, to know that it is there if we really need it. Kelley in NV
