Hi my name is lisa, i have an 11 year old daughter that is high functioning autistic, I live in harrisburg, pennsylvania, and have no complaints about our services. her kindergarder and first grade teacher helped me get her potty trained at school, she had a tss at school but is now main streamed in regular classes for three hours for acedemics and and three hours in the autism class to learn lifeskills, and get ot, pt, and speech. it took 6 months to get her ssi, but after that i immediatly got a tss at home and school, and a bsc for her. she also was in the special olympics for swimming and won 2nd place....... she is doing well. now dont get me wrong. we have a high crime rate here in the city, harrisburg is like a small philadelphia or a baby new york city. but for special needs kids i can say for my experiance. i have had no problems from the harrisburg school district, or the services this state provides for them.........H

C'mon over to the other side of the lake, Holly! Move to the south side

of Milwaukee & send your kids to Manitoba School. We have a great

school psychologist and he follows all the rules! It was a teacher here

who not only guided us to an Aspergers dx, but asthma as well! We have

a number of spec ed students, and varying degrees of IEPs & 504s. The

school goes thru 8th grade. Grades K5 - 3rd have a 15 to 1 student to

teacher ratio. Can you tell that I love my son's school??

The schools are frustrating, but there are some really great services available here in Rhode Island! I have a child who recently received his diagnosis of PDD-NOS and am just starting the process of getting the Beckett coverage so I can have access to the services that my employer offers. I work in the child and family services division of an agency who serves individuals of all ages (

E.I. up until geriatric) with disabilties and we have two different home programs for kids ages 3-21 with transitional services at age 21 into either a group home, day program, or indepent living services, or no services if the child doesn't need them anymore (which is mostly determined by the parent). The programs we have for kids are awesome; I took the job so I could really learn about the whole process and it's great- either the parents or a clinical team writes a service plan and then we hire a worker to spend X amount of hours a week with the child to implement that plan, whether it's toileting, counting money, awareness of " stranger danger " , street crossing skills, to curb violent/self-abusive behavior, etc. I can't wait toi get these services going for us! I work with about 30 families who are all satisfied with the progress their children are making through participation in these programs. The thing that makes RI good is because it's so small- all of the provider agencies get to know one another and can work together with relative ease. Things get done a lot faster when the providers know one another personally and we can make a phone call to someone we already have a relationship with in order to get something moving for a family!

> Hi Holly,

I mainly lurk here, but I live in San , CA, and I've had great

luck in getting services for my son. We live in the Evergreen school

district. My son recieved his IEP in 5th grade, and is now in a HFA

classroom at a public middle school. I've sometimes had to be a bit

forceful to get my issues heard, but for the most part it's been

fairly straight forward. In his other special ed classroom, he had

therapy twice weekly, as well as social skills help. Now we see a

therapist in a private practice, both for family and for my son. He

also sees a Develpmental Pediatrician who is local and a short drive

from us. There is also a local chapter of Parents helping Parents,

who have boatloads of info for parents of special needs kids.

Unfortunately it costs alot more to live here than in the other

states you mentioned. That may factor into your decision. I hope

others chime in and give their opinions.

Hi we live in Baltimore county in land, If because we pay school taxes we are in tilted to free services through the school system. If your child attend public school then you are titled. My son has and still get services through the school and they are free, speech oc therapy, he has a scribe and a laptop which he does all his work on and the school provides it. our state also has inclusion if your child needs that. Good Luck in your travelsH <hollandejt@...> wrote: AND WHERE ARE YOU????? We are

California has superb services, the school district here is stellar. BUT!!! I am leaving California, the school district, Regional Center for the ability to live and not survive. We make between 75 - (this year will be) between 95 and 110k - and we barely scrape by every month. In my adult life, I have never been on vacation, have never been able to take the children to Disneyland as it is too expensive, had to sell our home 2 years ago because we had a 3200 a month mortgage, and I am 2 months behind on day care.We are moving to North Central Arkansas - I have talked at length on the phone with people out there - and while they don't have Regional Center - they have wrap around services - which can be better.mbkempner <charlie.kempner@...> wrote: > > AND WHERE ARE YOU????? I love my sons' school!!! The principal and the teachers have been fantastic! Actually I think they go above and beyond the call of duty! Anytime I have a concern, I can phone and talk with someone who will listen to my concern and they are always willing to try something new to help my son with AS. And if they have an idea, they call and let me know what I think. 's teacher will sometimes call just to let me know how is doing or sometimes to warn me a meltdown could be coming at home after something has happened at school.

My older son is in the process of being diagnosed with ADHD. Without an IEP or any suggestions from me (because I didn't know what to suggest to help him) his teacher as devised many innovative ways to teach him. I am amazed when I talk to her and hear the extra work she puts in to ensure he is learning! I could go on and on about this school. Our principal told me once that this is why the school is here, to teach children and it is up to the staff at the school to find the best way to teach each child individually as they are all different! That's the kind of attitude it takes to make a great teacher and a wonderful principal. I wish I could give my kids' school an award of excellence for the great things they do!

Okay, I'm done!
