Explaining Surgery to an Aspie

My son is almost 5 and is getting his tonsils removed

soon. How do you

explain what is going to happen to an Aspie? He has a hard time with

transitions and wants to know everything that is going to happen when we are

going some where new. To the best of my knowledge he will not stay

overnight at the hospital but I won't know for sure until we see the ENT

on

Thursday.

*********Hi, I would go to the

library or book store. I imagine there are several books out there on the

subject. I know Berenstein Bear series has one on going to the Dr. I think he

will be in at least over night. Once you know you could draw a picture of him

there with a favorite stuffed animal keeping him company. If he is over night

find out if you can stay in the room with him. Good luck, Gail A.

My aspie daughter was 9 when she had her

tonsils out. It was done out-patient, but the surgical center had a

special program for children facing surgery. They brought them in as a

group and showed them around from pre-op to the surgery area to the post-op

area. They even let her pick the flavor of sleepy medicine! You may want

to see if your hospital has the same sort of program. It made a big

difference. If they don’t have one, see if you can find books about

going to the hospital. I’m sure that they’re out there.

I have to tell you my daughter at about 4 had her's out. She has

moderate autism. I wrote a social story. Used stick pictures and

phots. It worked like a charm. I even commented in my story that her

throat would hurt. No complaining and I couldn't have asked for it to

go better.

I told the Dr.s to give her the anasteasa through a shot because I knew

she wouldn't drink anything.
