Guest guest
Hi,I just thought to toss in my two cents worth. I was very nervous this, yr, putting Donovan into kdg. I had thought at first to homeschool, but he is such a social boy,and watchign his sisters go, eagerly waiting for his turn, I decided to put him in school. one of the reasons i decided this was that they all go to a very small charter school, and I know all the teachers and staff and volunteer there a lot. the kdg teacher is the same one the girls had, and the class size is really small.Anyway, I asked lastyr about the 504. I asked for a meeting to determine eligibility. I took with me, a letter from the pulmo, a letter from the family dr and that went over very well. they stated for me why he needed it, what accomadations to be made, and what to do in an emergency. I got no resistence at all on this, they set it up for the next week, we all signed, the vp, myself, and both kdg teachers, just in case his was absent for some reason. some of his provisions were: not to be seated near anyone who was actively coughing, sneezing, or appearing sick. not to be disciplined, grade wise, for multiple absences. a home bound study teacher in place in the event he missed more than " x " amount of days of school. Now, savannah has been sicker this yr than ever. She has missed many, many days. I requested two weeks ago that we do a 504 plan for her. we will have many of the same provisions for her, with the addition of extra tutoring for her reading problems if she continues to miss school, and to be kept inside in the event the weather is lower than 35 degrees. that bothers her asthma a lot, cold air. the other thing donovan had in his was just that all " specials " teachers(gym ,art) know that he is post nissen and to NEVER induce vomiting in any circumstance because of that. to call 911 immediately. I guess my point is, for us, the 504 was very easy to obtain with a drs letter. The only reason to not want to do it formally is if they plan to not follow it, and want no legal recourse.
