Guest guest
I have tried for this too. At the age of 18 your child will be entitled to the man in the moon. Guest guest
Hi Beth - I am curious how SSI pays for social skills? Both my kids are on the spectrum and get Social Security and SSI benefits. We are in the State of CA, which has the regional center system through the DD, so that is how my son had his social skills paid and how the floor time and feeding is paid for my other son. I was not aware that SSI actually pays for bills. Can you explain this further? There is also a group called ssi4kids that I belong to and it has lots of good links and files in the home page. Guest guest
Hi Bonnie! We have a psychologist in town that does one on one social skills as part of the treatment program, so she bills Medicaid just like any other doctor. We have not been able to get floor time or aba covered even if it comes through the psychologist’s office. I have one child, 8, with aspergers, and one child 6 with high functioning autism (who still has many one on one communication issues). I find with my six year old I have a lot harder time getting certain things he needs (like aba, pivotal response, or floortime), because they are not covered. Everything else is though, from medical, to speech, OT, psychiatrist, neurologist, psychologist, etc…. Guest guest
My kids both are on Medi-Cal and not medicaid, so that may be where there is a difference since the Medi-Cal Matt is on is an HMO due to needing to get goodnites and not generic diapers and the HMO will pay for that. My other son Nick is on straight regular Medi-Cal and can go to any Dr that takes Medi-Cal. I am also the home health care worker for Matt with the state of CA through the IHSS, in home supportive services - not sure if other states have this, but Dr needs to sign forms saying needs protective supervision and child usually is more severe and needs help in bathing, dressing and eating. I get my insurance through the Union. I wrote about the process on my site. Guest guest
Beth, I live in Florida and my son is on the Med Waiver. When I applied for SSI, I was turned down due to income (child support). Is there something I'm missing? I went to the appointment, filled out a book of information and after the myriad of questions, when they asked for household income, they turned me down. I thought they would give it based on the autism diagnosis.....help!! SylviaSee what's free at AOL.com.

Guest guest
Hello, my son Avery used to get SSI but they said that we maid too much money for him to continue to receive benefits. As a matter of fact I am still repaying money that they said he was over paid. I don't understand what my income has to do with my son's getting benefits. While he was getting it was very helpful with paying for his meds and drs. visits but now we are coming out of pocket for these things along with our other household bills it is very hard. Guest guest
, I do not know about when children are younger but I applied for my dd when she was 12 (when she was correctly diagnosed AS, BP, and ADHD) and she is 14.5 yrs old now and we are waiting for the appeal to go to court. Per our lawyer, it will probably be Dec 2007 before we get there. Not to discourage you, just wanted you to know, it can be a long haul. I had to get an attorney a year ago because all the paperwork and jumping through hoops was just a nightmare for me to keep up with while dealing with her, my nt daughter and PDD nos son as well as life! I was leery but as my Aunt pointed out, us getting 75 or 80% is better than the nothing we have now!!! It has been such a relief to not have to do more than sign auths for the attorney and keep them updated! To me, it is well worth the percentage they take on contingency, just to lose the stress. According to our attorney, there were 7 judges that handle these cases in this region (Iowa) and 2 have already retired and two more are going to this year and there is a hiring freeze in that area so no new judges, the three that are left simply have to do the work of 7!!! UGGHHHH!!!! For the record, my dd is high functioning academically but not emotionally or socially or for doing things for herself etc. That makes it harder I think. She receives in home therapy, social skills training and is on 3 meds. Has no friends or extracirricular activities etc but she is too "normal" to them! I give up somedays!!! Anyway, enough venting for myself, I hope yours goes much smoother, it sure seems like noone in the system here is familiar with autism in general let alone Aspergers so it is an uphill battle. Guest guest
unfortunatley they go by income .i am lucky enough to get ssi for my 2 sons.but i have to make sure i meet the income guilines i read someone else say she made over the limit of 1000.00 i do not know if it is different in every state but for my kids ssi i cannot have income over 2100.00 and after the 2100.00 they givew an adjusted rate.so to all of you in any state fight as long and hard as u can .it is there to help.and i honeslty do not know why it is an income guided thing i mean unless ur like bill gates then i can understand not gettign it but a simple middle income family or low income family should get it regardless of income .and with my kids they consider it my income for welfare so in all honesty it dont pay for extras for the reason of autism it helps with my housing for the kids .i know it is to help with the upkeep of the kids but here all i get doen with it is paying my regular bills and that and they do get medical from the state and ssi so i praise that but for anything i need that i would have to pay out of pocket i still cannot get cuz i cant afford to .but i aint complaning i fi didnt have it for them i would be screwed .as of right now i do not work for my own reasons (lots of reasons but one main one is 4 kids and different schedules for each of them and no help(sitter wise and i refuseto work to pay a sitter and have nothing left over piointless.) so it can be crazy.good luck in fighting for it again u can always appeal Re: Social Security? Guest guest
I inquired about SSI at our Social security office, I was told right off the bat that we exheeded the income cap. I was also told that I should go ahead and apply even though we would get turned down. The woman I talked to said it would make easier for my son to collect benefits if he needed to after he turned 18. I dont know I get this vision of him sitting in an apartment by himself collecting an SSI check... ******************************************************************* > 's speech theripist suggested that I apply for SS disibility for > who is four and diagnosed with Aspergers. Guest guest
It was wonderful for us to have an attorney. A disability attorney is worth every cent of the percentage. They don't take on cases that they will lose because they get paid when you get paid. After our attorney spent 15 minutes talking/listening to our then 7 year old, he said "no problem". This was after reading reports that claimed child was high functioning. The disability evaluator (speech) whispered to me after spending 30 minutes with child "why are we testing him.... it's so obvious". The high functioning attractive child is lost in the shuffle, so don't give up. Priscilla Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? Check out new cars at Autos. According to our attorney, there were 7 judges that handle these cases in this region (Iowa) and 2 have already retired and two more are going to this year and there is a hiring freeze in that area so no new judges, the three that are left simply have to do the work of 7!!! Guest guest
Here the salary requirements are according to how many are in your family. There are 5 in our family. We can make up to $3600 without affecting the SSI…..For the area we are in, where average rents are around $700 for a decent house, that’s not so bad at all…..
