Guest guest
Hi Dina, I feel for you and your daughter, and with our girls being in ballet and gymnastics it makes it so much harder. I swear, my daughter is putting weight on by the day. At gymnastics a couple of days ago, I could see one of the girls looking at her along with her coach. They didn't say anything about her weight, but I'm surprised. My daughters weight goes all to her belly and her face. She is the most beautiful little girl, and these meds make her all puffy and bloated. This is nothing but a nightmare. I guess the question is, " meds or no meds?!!!!! When they do a serious sport like our girls do, it really is a huge decision on our part what to do about the meds.My girl has been in gymnastics for 4 years now. There is no way I'm going to have her quit now after coming so far! If you find a soulution let me know!! I'll be thinking of you and your poor little girl!!! I know how your hurting!!!!!! This disease is a monster! It just takes and takes, till they have nothing left!! Hugs! Judy Dina <dina.n.jones@...> wrote: Judy, I'm also in the middle of this weight gain problem with my 11 yr. old who just started middle school. She went from 73 lbs. this summer to weighing in this morning at 100!! She had a complete " I'm fat! " meltdown. The antipsychotics really turn her OCD around, but she puts on the weight FAST. I called the pdoc this morning to ask to discontinue it and we'll see what happens. I'm waiting for a call back. It's so hard! The med. makes her anxiety completely melt away, but the weight isn't tolerable to her. She's a ballet dancer and her teacher keeps telling her to " suck it in! " because her weight goes right to her belly. I really hate this disease and what it does to our kids. Dina
Guest guest
I've read that some docs will add the med Topomax (sp?) and that it really helps with the weight. I *may* have even read of some taking this when off a medication to help with weight loss after too. There might be another med like Topomax that some doctors add.... If I see any info, I'll pass along. A " google " for Topomax (topamax?) might turn up some things.
Guest guest
My 11-year-old put on about 12 pounds right after starting Zoloft - it happened over the course of about six weeks, and I was utterly shocked (she had weighed the same for three years and actually looked pretty skinny). I thought it might be the Zoloft and asked the docs about that - but LO and BEHOLD - she got her period a month later. And I started looking at all of the girls in her fifth-grade class, and many of them had gotten chunky or bulky. So it may be meds, but it also may be puberty. And the good news is that continuing on Zoloft didn't change my daughter's weight after her periods started, so I think it may have been a coincidence ... good luck! Our society is too critical of our bodies anyway! Dina <dina.n.jones@...> wrote: Judy, I'm also in the middle of this weight gain problem with my 11 yr. old who just started middle school. Guest guest
Judy, She's been dancing for 8 years. It's very sad because she just got passed over for a role in The Nutcracker and I know it was because of her weight. She's just not as graceful as she was a couple of months ago and she can't leap very well anymore. It's heartbreaking. We just had another conversation about it after school when she came in grabbing her stomach flab and saying, " I'm so fat! I just want to be normal! " She logically understands that it's the medicine, but it's hard enough as an adult to deal with sudden weight gain, let alone when you are 11. Guest guest
Hi All, Zonegram is also sometimes used. Tommy took Topamax for a while, but did not loose weight, He takes a good dose of Concerta and even that hasn't helped with the weight gain from Prozac and Abilify. I'd rather have him heavy than have to send him elsewhere to live. These meds have given him the ability to stay at home, so the weight is a small price to pay. in Southeastern PA <@...> wrote: I've read that some docs will add the med Topomax (sp?) and that it really helps with the weight. Guest guest
My son took Prozac also, as well as myself, and neither of us gained weight from it. An antipsychotic is an entirely different story. Remember that everyone responds differently to meds. hugs Judy
Guest guest
Hi Judy, I think the prevailing wisdom with the weight gain issue and SSRI's is that if you are prone to heaviness, you are more apt to gain. Tommy started Prozac years before Abilify, so the weight gain started with it. Abilify has caused much more, but our life has had some tumultuous major changes take place over the last 3 years and the p-doc and I don't want to change from Abilify unless we know that things are more stable. I recognize that I am fortunate that my daughter has not had to take any medications and is as skinny as can be! Guest guest
I wish I had more facts about the weight gain issue. My son could stand to gain, so his abilify is fine for now. My daughter has always been a tiny little thing, until these meds. She took zoloft alone at first, for about a year, and stayed very slim,it wasn't until the antipsychotics, that she started to gain massive amounts of weight. Her doctor said she wouldn't gain as much on the abilify as the seroquel, risperdal, remeron, etc, that she was on, but she gained just as much, just as fast. hugs Judy Joye <cjoye16@...> wrote: Hi Judy, I think the prevailing wisdom with the weight gain issue and SSRI's is that if you are prone to heaviness, you are more apt to gain. Guest guest
Dina, I agree, None of us are overweight either! My daughter only becomes overweight from the meds. After she is off of them for awhile she goes back to being underweight. I guess we are in the same boat! hugs Judy Dina <dina.n.jones@...> wrote: Joye wrote: > > Hi Judy, > > I think the prevailing wisdom with the weight gain issue and SSRI's is > that if you are prone to heaviness, you are more apt to gain. > > Judy, this hasn't been our experience. Guest guest
What SSRI is your daughter taking? Anything? Nothing? Some children are fortunate and do not gain weight from SSRI's. Most children and adults do. Also, of all the atipicals, Xyprexa is the WORST for weight gain. Please go to the OC Foundation web site for verification of this.... Guest guest
Dina, I think it was meant for Judy, but there are so many of us who have the same concerns. My son would not be able to live at home if it were not for these medications. He is ridiculed by other kids - even in his private school where they ALL are on medication and a lot of them have weight problems because of the meds....go figure that! Guest guest
Hi, My daughter has been on Zoloft for 5 years. She has never gained an ounce on that. She has gained all the weight when on the antipsychotics. Believe me, she needs to be put back on one, like I said before, but the weight gain is a tremendous factor. Judy
