One thing we had put into Donovans 504 was for him to be seated away

from any child that was actively ill....sneezing, coughing, etc. The

teacher would just say.........OH!!!!Lets change our seats around

today....and make sure Donovan ended up nowhere near a sniffly kid. We

also had put in that missed days would not be held against either

child(savannah or donovan), could not be the basis for retention, nor

any other punitive actions, that workloads could be

lowered.......like, only having to do every other question on one side

of the page, rather than two sides of a math page........that tutorial

services be offered if the grades are sliding. Another neat thing

Savannahs teacher did, on her own, before we even put the 504 in

place, was to grade solely on what work was already turned in, since

sAvannah was in the hospital for a while at the end of one marking

period, so she just graded her on what was already in instead of

giving her an incomplete or anything. Also,EXACTLY what steps need to

be followed in the event of an emergency situation...like, in Donovans

case, he has had a surgery that makes vomiting difficult, so if he

ingested a poison of any kind and an EMT gave him an emetic of some

sort, his stomach could burst from pressure. That NEEDS to be

followed. so not only the homeroom teacher got copies of this, but I

followed the vp to the office, made him copy extras for the specials

teachers(gym, music, art, computers, etc) and walked around the school

making sure none of those teachers had any questions about what to do

with him.

thus far, they have been very accomodating.
