My OCD son will not use any public washroom for his 'sit-down' duties. Never has. He went to camp for a week and didn't use the can once! I thought that it was really strange, and have never been able to convince him there are no germs, but he's 16 now and still refuses. Funny, my younger, 'normal' child went to camp this summer and he too refused to sit-down all week. I don't know how their bowels take it. Hm. Just reread your email. She says it's not the germs, it's being there alone. Neither of my boys will go in the basement alone. Do the kids go alone, or does the whole class go as a group? If going alone is the problem, I would talk to the teacher and ask if she can always have someone go with her. At 6, I dont think it would be too out of the ordinary to have 3 or 4 girls go together at a time. My dd HAD issues but that was due to germs and not liking the automatic flushers. Our pediatric urologist wrote a " prescription " for it, and the school is fantastic with helping anyway they can. We are lucky our school nurse is so kind and compassionate. She even called her indiscriminately out of class and 'reminded' her to go. It is SO great to have helpful, understanding people. Still, I have never found out what the true obsession is, whether its germs, or the sensations, or something else. Hello, Thanks for both of the replies..I talked to her teacher this morning at recess and she said my daughter told her she was concerned about getting stuck in the restroom so she has been propping the restroom and classroom door open for her. My daughter told me this morning she does fine if she has a friend with her but just doesn't like going alone. She has never liked public restrooms when she was three we drove to Disneyland and she went eight hours without using a restroom...she just plain refused. In kindergarten the restroom was in the classroom so it wasn't as big of an issue. I am confident she hasn't been bullied, it's just another ocd symptom and we have to find a balance between accomodating her fears enough so that she can thrive in school and fighting the OCD. We suspected hypoglycemia. Whatever the reason, though, the doctors sort of " pooh-poohed " it. Doesn't seem to be quite as much of an issue now that she is " stable " on Prozac. In retrospect, though, I wonder if it wasn't really more of a diversion that broke the cycle than helping in and of itself. Does that make sense? (Funny part is that none of them were the much more typical " germs " ). 1- He had a general monster obsession that was absolutely horrible with the bathroom because it was dark, you were supposed to close the door and be alone, and the toilet made a horrible noise when you flushed it. 2- He went through a pretty long period where he had a kind of gender obsession. We think (never could get all the way to the bottom of it), that it had something to do with any association with girls, and that the end result would be the loss of an important body part! He refused to have *anything* to do with girls for months. Wouldn't read books with female characters or sit near girls or walk by the girls clothing section... And, he wouldn't use the restroom with the other kids. It turns out that he was just convinced that he was going to pull down his pants and find it missing, that he was terrified of being with the other kids and having them see. (Oh, and he had to " check " himself constantly too). BTW, at its height, it wasn't just the school restroom. He was terrified of every bathroom. He was wetting his pants rather than go. (He was 8!). We later found out that he'd been urinating in very strange places. Quite frankly, we thought there was something reallly, really, wrong with him, especially because the first round happened before we really knew about OCD. She does have germ issues, but that one hasnt occurred to her! Since we are on the bathroom subject, how do you get them to wipe their own butts clean? My dd is 5 and starting preschool next week, will go to kindergarten next week. She wants me to check her butt after she poops, and it usually isnt clean. I have taught her how to wipe and to keep wiping until the paper is clean. But she has a hard time with it. Any suggestions? She likes the flushable wipes, can she bring them to school without being too noticable about it? My son always yelled from the bathroom, " I'M DONE!! " , so then we'd go check his bottom. My friend's answer to me was, let him do it on his own and that will have to be good enough. All you can do at that point is make sure they get a good bath every night and they eventually get better and better at it. I don't know if this will be sufficient since your child has bathroom/germ issues. Maybe you should discuss the wipes with the teacher and see if she has any suggestions. Guest guest Posted September 8, 2006 Report Share Posted September 8, 2006 thank you all for responding - funny but I went into get something while my other dd 5 was in the bathroom and she's back to doing it " normal " so I guess it is OCD to do it the other way - I know some places are dirtier than others and that doesn't phase her as much as not pulling up until she has washed and having a sink in there is awesome to her!!!! - someday....maybe she won't care as much??? all her OCD things make some sense though - dirty garbages - bathroom stuff - kids putting dirty tissues back - MOST have some good points - but still she's extreme about them Eileen Quoting Price <firecooklmp@...>: > Not sure if this is what you mean, but I get myself " dressed " before > I leave the stall of a public bathroom.
