If he's prone to meltdowns, I'd drive if I were you, and go in really early, to miss rush hour. The traffic is unreal, especially around 5th Avenue where the Rockefeller Center beautiful tree is. There's also a skating rink.

How is he with a lot of people? There are a lot of people, especially at Christmas time.

Enough cavils. Here are some suggestions.

FAO Schwartz, at 5th Avenue and 58th is the most wonderful toy store, and enormous.

Lord & , lower down on 5th on the West side of the Avenue, has (or used to) charming window displays of Christmas scenes.

You might want to call the different stores to see what they have in their windows: 's, Lord & , Saks Fifth Avenue around 49th Street, Bergdorf Goodman ... Macy's at 34th.

Also see what's going on at the Empire State Building, near Macy's.

The Wollman Memorial ice skating rink, at the South end of Central Park, is beautiful, if you all ice skate.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Upper Fifth Avenue, on the East side of Central Park) will have a beautiful tree and probably other things.

The Museum of Natural History on the West side of Central Park at, I think, 79th Street (enormous building with lots of dinosaurs -- some boys really like dinosaurs) will probably have something going on.

If you do want to call places and need phone numbers, I can probably get some for you. Let me know.

Hello All,I want to take my 11 year old to NYC for a day trip to look at Christmas Decorations, have lunch and go to a toy store along with his 14 year old brother, my friend and her son.As you know, I need to plan it so there are no lull periods. Anyone done this before and can give me suggestions. We want to catch Greyhound up and back, do a walking tour or take subway. He loves long rides but I don't want to take chances with schedule changing abruptly.Any advice?

Dear Mhawkins: We were just up in New York visiting family and took my son to NYC for a day trip. We went first to Good Morning America arriving in NYC at 6 a.m. We had reservations to get into the indoor studio audience which we did.He was told to stand in front with the other little kids(he is9) and were not near him. He did very well. Of course he was on Aderall 30mg. time release medication at the time for his ADHD.We were proud of him standing quietly for 2 hours. When the show was over we went across the street for breakfast at a cafe.He ate very little. Then left and took subway up to Rockefeller Centre to see the Xmas tree(which was still not ready) and took him to St. s Cathederal(Catholic Church). He was so good and I was so proud. Then we took subway downtown to World Trade Centre. I needed to pay my respects and say a prayer. We then looked at childrens pictures on wall which were

drawn by children who lost parents(I cried).Son is now fixated on one child whose drawing he liked. Then went back up to midtown and went and looked at Macy's windows. They were wonderful. My son really enjoyed that.Had lunch and went back on train to grandparents house on LI.My son was diagnosed high functioning autism with adhd and some PDD.I was amazed by his behavior.Of course we had prepared him for this trip by telling him things we would be doing. He was just trilled to ride the train and subway which he is very much into.He has lots of the Tank tracks, vehicles and buildings from that.Best thing I can tell you is to get information on NYC and see what he and your family would love to do.Now is the best time to go because of all the decorations. Most store windows have some type of window display.Of course, I am partial to NYC cause I grew up in NY.Now live in VA and wish I had not left NY.mhawkins0 <autismindc1@...>
