Guest guest
Hello Bruce... Thank you so much for all of these wonderful suggestions! I am saving this email in my 'important reference' file! As parents, we want so much to help our children, but we don't always know how to do it. Thanks so much! Re: HIGH SCHOOL and beyond. If I could go back in time and instruct my parents about the best way to help me at age 18... I would suggest creating artificial circumstances to start things moving in primal/basic areas.I would suggest they ask me if it would be ok to pay a friendly understanding woman to have lunch with me 2 or 3 times just to talk and be accepting of me. (explain how this would be only for therapy purposes) Maybe she could be a psychology student from a local college. This would have opened up a huge part of my mind which needed to be unblocked before other areas could emerge. Then pay an employer under the table to hire me for a brief period, promising to treat me with great care and compassion. This would have been embarrassing, even so it would have loosened me up like nothing else. Only after this I would I persue more formal education, since formal education alone isn't enough. He needs life skills, which lead to connections with others which makes it easier to assimilate behaviors such as common sense.just a thoughtbruce>> Hi there> > I follow these posts when I can.> > I have noticed someone who mentioned the DEPT of REHAB.> > I used to work for them. He did not take the STEP program in high school. My son has never had a job. The REHAB hospital has tested him extensively last May, and even though he took Driver's Ed in school in tenth ( required to graduate) and passed with an A, he did not go behind the wheel. He was told at the REHABILITATION hospital that tests students with disabilities, last May, that he should wait a few years before he drives due to the way that his Aspergers and ADHD impact him.> > So, meanwhile, I wanted to mention that he is bright and does well school wise and is an honor student.
