Oh Jules, I have wondered how you are. Not so good apparently and I'm sorry

to hear that. We don't have much in the form of money and I am spending the

little extra's I have lately on mailing for the gift give away but I do have

a suggestion for you. I have for many years shopped at Thrift Stores where

there are wonderful savings. Ours here even in our tiny town there are two.

One church and one community help center. They sell cute , very nice

clothes for 50cents and 1.00 per item. My house is furnished also with

Thrift items. I got my two couches last year for 16.00. I give these

suggestions with lots of love and if I were smaller in size I would send

some clothes. If you tell me what size I would be happy to look out for you

some. I'm sorry I can't send cash this month but maybe in a better one

where I can scrounge that extra 20. Much love dear, till soon, Melt

Two months ago I was put on Social Security's " protective payee program. "

In other words, my SSDI check goes to a " financial payee " who then pays out

You're so sweet, Melt! Yes, I'm feeling awful lately. My weight is dropping

4-5 pounds a week, and the docs are tapering me down on the methylpred (which

will make my weight loss go faster). Actually, I'm losing muscle mass. The

atrophy of my muscles is from my steriod usage and nutritional deficiencies.

I'm also going blind with cataracts in both eyes. That, also, is from steroid

use. Eye doc told me that I'll probably only make it until May or June and then

will have to undergo lens replacements in both eyes. Oh joy!

I do go to the thrift-type stores, and have been looking. I can't afford their

prices! Once spring is here, I'll head out for garage sales, but now is the

problem. I mean, $138/month to live on is darn near impossible! I don't need

more stress. That's why they sent me to a protective payee; so I wouldn't be so

stressed out about money. We all know what stress does for our health...

Appreciate the thoughts!

Big hug,

Jul

Hi jul,

So sorry to read of all your problems.

I never heard of that " protective payee " program. Why did you get

put on that?? Also..$138 a month...you don't also have to buy food

out of that do you??

Have you checked with your local social services, sometimes they

have programs for disabled people with little money. How about

like food stamps, would you qualify for those??

a suggestion: Put an ad in your local newspaper briefly explaining

about your severe wieght loss due to illness, and that you need

clothing..you will have many people donating, because this is getting

to be the time of year that they clean their closets, and they'd rather

give them to someone they know is in need before they cart them

all off to Goodwill. The same for furniture. Sending furniture and/or

clothing through UPS or post office would cost too much for most

of us who live in other towns or states.

Wondering how your liver tests are dong at this time?? Are they

still bad??

Hugs, from Central Wisconsin

Hey Tricia,

" Protective Payee " is through both federal Social Security and county

government. I know here in Wisconsin we can get it anywhere. The " payee " at

the county level gets your disability checks, makes out a budget, pays your

bills and then sends you your " allowance " to live on. I'm still a bit in shock

over how I'm going to make it.

My " allowance " is for food, gas, clothing, everyday things, cleaning supplies,

etc. I don't qualify for foodstamps.

Oh, I do have ads up all over (especially my church), but no responses yet (it's

only been a couple of weeks).

Regarding my high liver function studies, no doc is putting me on anything more.

In fact, I'm on a tapering dose of 4mg/month. Have to do the 4mg, because

that's the size of the itty bitty tablet. My legs have swollen so much in

reaction to the taper, that they ordered me 2 pair of total leg thigh-high TED

stockings. Ish...are those a pain, or and so fashionable too. Darned if I'm

going to wear them in summer!!!!

No actually I'm hoping some miracle will happen and I will get enough to get me

by.

Still here,

Hey Jul, I get to wear those lovely stockings and did even when lived in

Oklahoma with humidity at 120 degrees. Caroline suggested that I could dye

them and even decorate them which I think is a great idea but haven't done

yet. My problem with them is to make sure they fit your size correctly. I

am so tall that they always fit them short and then they don't function as

well. Just wanted to let you know you aren't alone in that department.

Love, Melt

Hi Jul,

There must be a food pantry in town, and that would help some.

Hopefully you will get the help you need.

So, you are saying you won't be able to be on *any* meds for

the disease because of high liver function levels?? You are

taking the Medrol?? That's what I'm still on (since 1979) 8mgs

a day. I lnow they are difficult to decrease because they come

in the 4 mg tablet size. I have broken them in half and even in

1/4 pieces when trying to wean off. (got down to 2 mg once!)

The 1/4 mg can hardly be seen! What do you have to take

for the pain?? Do you have to pay for your meds too??

Trying to think of what you could do...haven't found that

sugar daddy yet I take it?? Seriously that's not a bad idea.

Let's get Caroline in on this..she usually has a thousand ideas.

LOL, Tricia - a sugardaddy....nope, haven't found one yet (course really not

looking).

I do use the food pantries, but because of my GI problems (malabsorption

syndrome), there is not a lot of foods I can eat. So, I end up taking things

back out of the pantry bags and ask that they give it to someone else who can

eat it.

So far, my present rheumy will only let me be on methylprednisolone. Everything

else is MORE toxic to your liver, ESPECIALLY MTX...which worked so well for me.

I'm wearing thigh-high anti-embolism stockings now because of the severe

swelling of my legs. I don't think they're tight enough, so I'm going back in

for a check.

I am on MS-Contin twice in a 24-hour period. That does help with the pain more

than any other pain med I've been on. I'm pretty satisfied with it. I'm lucky

(because of the pilot program I'm on here in Dane County), that I don't have any

co-pays for my meds. I do, however, take 15 different medications because of my

16 different diseases. I hate taking all those meds!

I did go to Saint Vinny's this morning and found a washer/dryer, living tables,

and possibly a sofa; however, I don't have enough money to buy them (much less

get them home!).

Life sucks, even if you're looking the other direction!

I'm sorry Jules, but life really sucks, as you say, when the best man in

the world dies and you have two boys to raise by yourself. Life .... when

you almost loose your life and then maybe your hand and don't even have a

phone. Life really really sucks when you have no insurance to get the

medicines that may or may not give you some life back. I feel today is not

the day to talk of furniture. That is how I feel today. Respectfully, Melt

This may not be popular or looked upon favorably, but as a family, we

must always be honest with one another , so please, if you don't like

what I am saying, please understand it is coming from the heart and

well intentioned....that said...

Hi Jul,

First off, let me say I have been there, so you don't think I am just

spouting off. I have been dirt poor, scared and with two babies. We

have used food pantries in the past, we creatively recycled

clothes...rubber bands help...we have used the same cushions as bed,

couch and romper room...lol...I was in a bad place, it was very dark,

so I understand. but the very first thing you need to do is to start

looking outward and not in. The more you look in on what you don't

have, and how much you hurt and how it is never going to change

except for the worse, the more it will. I have found that when I was

at my lowest and I started looking out , I found others lower than I

that needed me. The more I turned out, the better things began to

get. You have been given all that you have, your diseases your

challenges your poverty. Now you must decide what to do with them.

There are gifts in there, somewhere and it is up to you to decide if

you will try to find them or just accept them for what they are on

the surface with all their pain and misery. How can you do anything

in such pain and with nothing??? I have asked myself that as well.

You need to decide every day to do one thing, that is all just

one. " Today I will figure out exactly what I need for clothes "

or " Today, I will see if I can help out at the soup kitchen for a few

hours " or " Today I will see if I can trade these things that are no

longer do me any good for what I need. " Maybe there is something you

are good at that someone else needs. Maybe you could go and read to

an elderly person in a nursing home for a few hours...then while

there you may meet someone or learn something that wil help you. Does

that make any sense??

I was low, believe me. Now I am working full time, my boys and I

laugh all the time. I now have a disease, bad, it led me to all

here...great. It has taught me to use my talents NOW and not wait

until a better time. Stillls has given me the gift of understanding

time and clarity....what has it given you?

Hang in there. you are in my prayers.

Thank you for your thoughts. However, you don't know my situation. I do use

food pantries, but because of one or two of my 16 separate conditions, I am not

able to eat a lot of regular (good) food that most can.

I have worked very hard all my life and especially when raising my son from the

age of 6-1/2 weeks, by myself, no family left to help.

This is not an " attitude " situation, this is what my life is right now. I am

the most positive person you'd ever met, if you got the chance to meet me. I do

help others. It's a no-brainer there.

It's great to be on the " otherside " where you've come through and are energized

by the journey. I've been there also.

I don't feel it necessary to drone on and on about what conditions I have. But,

I do know that this list is full of kind and giving people. All I can say is a

quote from a Beatles' song - " I can get along with a little help from my

friends. "

This group is filled with friends. Don't judge or offer advice unless you know

the situation. This list is usually a wonderful forum for POSITIVE

reinforcement. AND, of course, we are not all the same or have taken the same

paths in life. I look to God and my faith to be by my side.

you will try to find them or just accept them for what they are on

the surface with all their pain and misery.
