Right now I'd like to thank you for caring so much for your charges on the bus. people like you are few and far between. The children you watch over are very lucky to have someone who cares enough to ask questions so that you can improve their daily bus ride and school experience. As for the little girl who screams, when does she start screaming and does it ever stop? It may be something as simple as the seatbelt if she has one or something sensory like smells(perfume food in luchboxes etc.)...Do you take the same route everyday? if not, maybe it's because things change.Does she sit alone? maybe she needs a matron sitting with her??? It's sort of trial and error. usually the parents can give you some insight so try asking the parents. Smells sights sounds feelings can just be so overwhelming. And for the other children....do they ALL bite and kick all the time? That sounds like they

may need some behavioural interventions from the school. They shouldn't be doing that ALL the time .. Good luck and again thank you for caring for the children. jo4jesus21 <JoJo4Jesus21@...> wrote: Hi everyone, im JoJo and im a bus para on a specail needs/preschool bus. been doin it almost 4yrs. also take care of my 3yr old specail needs nephew. got few questions on how i could better do my job. we have a lil girl thats about 5 that we have tried talking to her, playing music, parents give her bottle to her when she goes on bus but still just screams really loud. we also have got 4 preschoolers that have autism. is there anything i can do to limit the kicking, biting, scratching? have tried letting them play with toys, look at books and get down to there level when talking and buckleing them in. thanks for letting me join and any input i will try . Welcome JOJO-

I have discovered w/ my 5yr old autistic son that it

helps if all parties, parents, teachers and bus staff, have a social

story that gets to him before getting on the bus or while on the

bus. He won't listen to talking alot BUT the books work wonders. He

has gone from hitting kicking, climbing out of restraints to now

sitting in his seat w/o a harness. It took us 2 years and 2 school

districts to find the magic combo for him. BUT it has required all

to do the story.

I also was the one to buckle him in on the bus if he was not

cooperating w/the staff. I even had to take him back to the house 1

time for discapline and ever since he has improved. The parents can

make a big difference in how they r on the bus.

Could it be sensory? Maybe the noise of the bus. Maybe she is on overload. Have you tried sound mufflers????? She may wear them. They fit like earmuffs but block out sound. Do you know if her hearing is hypersensitive? If so these may help. My son has hypersensitive hearing. When he was younger he would meltdown in certain places. Mainly due to noise, although we didnt know it at the time. Once we figured it out we got the sound mufflers.... HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!! Now he is 11 and he now knows that he can just plug his ears if the noise is too much for him. He does not like to wear the earmuff thingies anymore because he does not like people to look at him strangely so we carry around earplugs so he can participate in all activities. Sea World was especially hard for him when he was younger. The clapping and cheering overwhelmed him. So we went again recently and took earplugs. He was initially nervous before we went into the Shamu show but he popped the earplugs in and

had no problems....... Maybe this is something?????? in Lancaster, Cajo4jesus21 <JoJo4Jesus21@...> wrote: Hi everyone, im JoJo and im a bus para on a specail needs/preschool bus. been doin it almost 4yrs. also take care of my 3yr old specail needs nephew. got few questions on how i could better do my job. we have a lil girl thats about 5 that we have tried talking to her, playing music, parents give her bottle to her when she goes on bus but still just screams really loud. we also have got 4 preschoolers that have autism. is there anything i can do to limit the kicking, biting, scratching? have tried letting them play with toys, look at books and get down to there level when talking and buckleing them in. thanks for letting me join and any input i will try

My question is- How do they act when they ride in their parents car?

Is this a sensory overload thing? If so get some advice/ideas from an

occupational therapist who is trained in sensory issues. Wish I could

help more but that is all I can think of.

Hi

i love working with these kids its such a blessing. school says she does it in school all the time. and the parents only speak spanish. she is in a wheelchair that is in the back but i sit in the seat in front of her and try talking with her. we go the same way each time.

the kicking, hitting, bitin, ect is not every day but most days atleast 1 does. also my nephew does a lot of kicking, biting, and scratching since his mom has moved out and gets vistition with her and her family 3 days a week.usally if i tell him nice hands or nice feet he will calm down.

I'm a mother of a 3 year old autistic child. He does ride the bus

home from school. Fortunately he does not present many problems on

the school bus. I know that he has some attention issues in class.

On the IEP, it does state a " functional behavior assessment " and a

few strategies to help him be more attentive. I would ask if the

teachers in class do anything to modify the children's behavior in

the classroom. I would also ask the parents if the child displays

any issues when riding with them and if so what do they do. Some

strategies that work for the classroom and at home may help in other

situations.

My son used to bite us when frustrated about a year ago. We ignored

the behavior and gave no consequence to the efforts. Eventually he

stopped. It got worse before it got better, but he has only bitten

two teachers in the past 9 months and quickly learned that the

behavior is not productive. We praise him when he is behaving well

in situations that he has difficulty in such as waiting in lines.

Good luck. I know it can be frustrating.

What kind of ear plugs do you use for your son and are they comfortable? I am very noise sensitive and would love to have some that I could sleep with in my ears especially. Thanks!
