is 17 now. He's been saying since elementary school that he

wanted to be a scientist. Right now he plans to go into medical

research. He did say back around...5th grade or so he wanted to be a

soccer player (all my sons played soccer), but later it was back to

scientist. (luckily, as he isn't athletically talented)

Overall, he is really the nicest person I know. Decent.

He loves learning. That is his " talent " and one that boosts his self-

esteem I think. His brothers are smart too, but is more

intellectual, always has been.

Your son's exotic animal doctor career reminds me of what I tried my

best, LOL, to steer my older son towards. He was an animal lover,

always watched TV shows about them, etc. I would tell him he needed

to grow up to work with animals, like tigers, monkeys, etc., move to

Australia (as I always wanted to go there) and work with the animals;

that way I could visit Australia and play with the animals! Sigh,

didn't work out that way! ;)

My son is also " pensive " and somewaht intense. I would say that he

is sort of vigilant in appearance (facial expression). He is sweet

and kind, loyal and needy. I would love to get him a puppy, but I am

afraid the barking would drive him nuts (sensory stuff). He shocks

me sometimes with how smart he is and the things that he says. He

also wants to be a scientist and hasn't waivered from this idea for

the past 2 years (he is just going on 8 though). I can picture that

somehow.

Sounds a lot like my ocd dd!

Personality types?

I was wondering about your children's personalities. My son is a very

" pensive " child. (that's how my husband has always described him). He

takes nothing for face value. The answers I give to his questions are

never enough. He always wants more. He loves to read. He loves history

and science, especially anything to do with animals. He says he wants to

be and I quote, " an exotic animal doctor. " I asked what that was. He

told me someone who works in a zoo and takes care of snakes, hyenas,

tigers, etc. I know, I know he's only eight and he'll change his mind at

least 20 times before he graduates from high school. On a school

assignment the first week of school he had to make an " all about me "

poster. He listed his favorite food as calamari from Carrabba's. I love

his uniqueness.

Yep, sounds a lot like my son too. My mother always called my son a colorful

child which seems to describe him well. My son has been tested as superiorly

gifted. I think I read somewhere that OCD is the gifted mans disorder. Would

be interesting to know some facts on that subject. I know not all people

with OCD are gifted. Or is the connection creative? My son is very creative

and highly imaginative which I am wondering is what really goes with the

OCD.

Would be interesting study to look at or do.

My 7 year old has an amazing imagination. He still has his favorite imaginary

friend, Klocky. He has had Klocky since he was 2. He used to have quite a

ménagerie of imaginary friends at least ten of them, with the oddest names-

Lift, Tap, Done, Not-Nice-, . He still talks to Klocky sometimes. He

loves to " talk-play " as he calls it with this whole imaginary world of pets,

elves and magic creatures, anything else he dreams up. We adopt these pets and

then he " sells " us things to go with them with some sort of point system he

keeps track of: food, shelters, toys, magic wands, etc.. All totally imaginary.

Sometimes he draws pictures. He has a wonderful vocabulary and tells the best

stories. I just bought him a tape recorder to record them, but he doesn't like

the sound of his voice on the tape. He's also extremely emotional and very

sensitive to everything around him. He laughs most of the time and has the best

sense of humor. Highly creative and intelligent. I remember telling him before

we knew it was OCD, that maybe it's just creative thoughts, that writers who

write scary movies must have " bad thoughts " or they would be able to write bad

scenes in movies and books. Of course, I bet they can control the thoughts and

OCDers can't.

Also, we are pretty sure he is going to be one of those Dungeons and Dragons,

role playing games type guys. Apple and the tree thing. My dh was a player, but

according to him, he was one of the cool ones. Okay sure honey, a cool one, LOL.

My 9 yr old son is very inquisitive.

It very nice that he wants to REALLY understand stuff but it can be

exhausting too.

He son loves to read and always scores very highly on the state

reading tests.

He gets A+ in reading related subjects.

He does struggle in math and carries a C average.

I told him that it's fair that something is more challenging since

reading comes so easily.

My son wants to be an " author that dumpster dives " when he grows

up.

He loves to find odd things on the side of the road: broken CDs,

rocks, weird indescribable objects, etc.

He brings this stuff home, washes it and puts it in his room to

ponder.

We joke that we wish he had the cleaning OCD instead of the evenness

OCD. J

My son has been writing comic books since he was about 5.

(He would dictate the text to us after he drew all the pictures).

He has characters that he has developed over the years and really

enjoys doing it.

When he was Student Of The Week at daycare he listed his favorite

food as artichokes. The teacher thought that was a riot coming from

a kid that was barely 3.

Most days this summer he set his alarm clock for 5am.

He got up, showered, got dressed and played on the computer or read

until I got up at 7.

He likes having the house all to himself.

My neighbor says he's a 40 yr old in a kid body.

My son has imaginary friends also. He really kind of scared me with all this

a year ago, he told me that he had not a few but HUNDREDS of these friends

in his head. He said when he does a math problem he sees a little monster

with the problem written as part of the picture, he says that everything he

looks at has a monster in it, like a tree might have a face with branches

for the arms and legs. At first I thought he might be over exaggerating, so

I asked him to draw some to me, without a blink he was able to start drawing

a bunch of those. I have tried to encourage him to write a book with these

guys.

I asked my therapist about this, I started wondering if these monsters were

what was causing all this anxiety, even though he says they are all cute and

nice monsters. My therapist is wondering if he is using those as a way to

cope. I can’t help wonder if OCD (getting stuck) is whats making there

hundreds instead of just a few.

Very interesting mind my son has. I hope and pray some day that he can put

all this imagination and creativity to use to do something really fun!

I would LOVE to collect all the pictures from our kids and make a book. Can

you imagine how cool that book would be with all there super duper creative

pictures?

Hmmm, moms brain is spinning now and she doesn’t even have OCD, ha!
