I'm in the same boat. I'm Nikki and my son is almost 5 and they say

he is 2-3 mentally. He isn't potty trained either, isn't social and

I'm not sure if he should start school next year or not.

I'm also a single mother. Is his father in his life? I need advice

on dealing with that to. My email is veltrinikki@....

Hi Kim,

My son , who is now 12, was in a similar situation. He was high

functioning, but really low social skills. Not completly potty

trained.

I have also worked for the IU as a para for 7 years and have a great

deal of experience when it comes to dealing with the district and the

teachers. I just had to re-open my son's IEP last week concerning

bullying and his waning academics because of this.

I have alot of suggestions for you, but not sure where to start.

What did they put in the IEP?

Did someone attend the meeting from the district?

Depending on the functioning level of your son, the IU does have

autistic support classrooms, depending on where you live.

If you want him mainstreamed, you can get a 1:1 aide for him. Of

course the district will not want this b/c they have to pay for it,

but oh well.

I would like to have some more info about your circumstances before i

give you anymore suggestions.

My email address is " beaverbank15349@... "

If I only knew what I know now, I would have done things so much

differently instead of letting the distict pull the strings.

Just remember, you are not alone!

i am also in pa.i do not understand how he can no longer be in the iu if he is autisitc and so forth he meets the criteria of the iu if maybe you meant he cant be in the pre school fight to get him in a special school your school district will try to teach him in their school because if they do not have a class for him and cant teach him they have to find a school that is able to teach him and they will have to pay for it .i am in jeannette area my son started out at jeannette finally they had to admit they couldnt teach him so they sent him to the latrobe school district where they had a life skills classroom .now he is in clairview which he is doing good.in the reg school districts there is a law where they have to be in their own age groups and if not they will have to have the parents sign a waiver agreeing it is okay for them to nbe in a class with kids not their own age (younger or older )the schools mostly all of them have

iu classes in all the reg ed schools most are referred to as self sontained or resource room they will have them in home room for the am opening ( the pledge that thing) then they will go to their room self contained or resource .this is the iu in the school district .if u are being denied the proper schooling get an ADVOCATE they willl help u fight to get wht you need for your child .good luck

My name is lisa, im in harrisburg pa, my daughter was in the iu for 4 weeks and was not potty trained, she wore pullups to school, she was placed in an autism class in the morning and regular class in the afternoon, her teachers worked with me on setting a potty schedule sending her to the bathroom every hour, her aids would help to change her. if it was too messy i would tell them to call me, but they never did. it was scarry for me but it worked out she is 10 now and wearing underwear all day at school now. see if the teachers and aids will work with you,,,,,,,
